Dave & Joe’s Fantasy Football Mix - GW33

14 April 2015

What looked to be a low-scoring week on Saturday of GW32 turned into a decent haul for those who held onto Agüero, have some of the United differentials or any of Chelsea’s old reliables on Sunday. Saturday was definitely a day for the differentials, Yannick Bolasie helping Palace to dismantle the formerly solid West Brom (was it just Ben Foster all along?). Kane blanked again as Spurs faltered, meaning if anyone had the courage to replace him with similarly low-priced Glen Murray they probably saw big gains in the rankings. Here we are going to look at the 3 main talking points for this coming gameweek and beyond:

Manchester Shitty?

The big talking point in GW22 was United eclipsing the blue moon. Agüero finally struck twice after blanking repeatedly against weaker options so those who trusted him look set to be rewarded with home games against West Ham and Villa. City’s players offer up a classic example of the age old form versus fixtures conundrum.

Dave: On paper, Spurs look to be their only possible challenge left this season, although they have tended to fix their poor runs of form by sticking 4 or 5 past them in seasons gone. In reality, they look like they’ve been dragged back into a race for the top 4 with Liverpool who now sit 4 points behind them. Agüero has finally scored, he’s gone from being a liability in your team to the league’s joint-top goalscorer. As we have said previously, he is capable of jumping into double figures regardless of the opposition, as shown by his 12 point haul against United. I personally plan on captaining him next week, while also holding onto Silva for a couple more weeks. Given that City have a decent game this week while Arsenal and Liverpool are pre-occupied with FA Cup dreams and United face Chelsea, I expect Agüero’s ownership and value to rise considerably this week after the exodus over the last month. I think Pellegrini will just about get them to the Champions League qualifier next August but he won’t be there to see it happen. Overall, I’m saying stick with the potential explosive point-getters in the City side, but offload the likes of Fernando, Jesus Navas and Gael Clichy etc if you happen to have them.

Joe: For once I actually wholeheartedly agree with Dave. If you have kept Agüero until now I would not get rid of him (or Silva) for the time being – In fact, captaining Agüero v West Ham (H), fresh from his 2 goal salvo at the weekend, is probably the safest captain option this week. City may well be a train wreck and Pellegrini will undoubtedly be collecting his dole this Summer, however, with their upcoming fixtures and perhaps a wounded lion mentality, they are attractive in terms of FPL. It's sink or swim time and with the red spectre of Liverpool uncomfortably close I can see City putting a few wins together to ensure Champions League qualification and keep the Abu Dhabi consortium somewhat happy. Surely they won't be caught by Liverpool...

The Red Devil Rises

While City were poor, it was not just their ineptitude that led to their shellacking at the hands of their rivals. Whisper it, but, with their sixth win in a row, Manchester United are back. Indeed Louis Van Gaal had a few teething problems since his move to the Premier League however with impressive victories over Liverpool, Spurs, and their noisy neighbours in the last month United are now back operating at pre-Moyesiah levels. A return to the Champions League and a title assault seem likely for 2015/16 but first they will be looking to finish out this season in style.

Dave: United’s midfield has been a case of the much-maligned and the much-missed. No two players embody this more than Fellaini and Herrera respectively. Fellaini was seen to be the ushering in of long-ball football but he has turned out to be a valuable, somewhat brutish asset for United. He has paired well with Wayne Rooney and has 25 points over the last 4 gameweeks. He was seen as the epitome of what went wrong under Moyes, but at £6.4m he seems a genuine differential option with an overall ownership of 1.6%. On the other hand, Herrera had been largely restricted to FA Cup appearances earlier in the season, scoring tasty goals against the likes of Yeovil, but since his first-team revival in late-February, he has 3 goals and an assist. At £7.2m with an ownership of 2.9%he also provides a solid option as a differential. Against Chelsea this week he might adapt a more reserved style of play, especially if he is without Carrick as a midfield partner, so he is possibly a more viable option when United’s fixtures start to ease in GW34.

Joe:While a sizeable minority questioned whether Radamel Falcao and his knackered knees could adjust to life in the Premier League, no one doubted Ángel Di María. However Di María’s reduced/non-existent role in the side has coincided with United’s great run of form. What is even more shocking is the form of his replacement, the unfashionable Ashley Young. At £4.9m,with 32 points in his last 6 games, and an ownership of just 0.6%among active players, Young is a low-priced differential that may enable managers to squeeze both Agüero and Sturridge into their squads for DGW34. At the higher end of the scale, Juan Mataat £8.5mand with 30 points in his last 3 games is an option for those looking to replace the out-of-sorts Christian Eriksen. Owned by 6.4%of live teams, the diminutive Spaniard could be a real asset to managers looking to boost their rankings.

The Barren Wasteland of GW33

With only 7 games this weekend, including blanks for Arsenal and Liverpool, GW33 poses a dilemma to many managers who will struggle to field a full complement of players. This headache is amplified by Liverpool who miss this weekend only to have a delicious looking DGW next week (WBA (A) & Hull (A)). With a 7 game week immediately followed by a 12 game week, there will be undoubtedly many points hits and much reshuffling adding an extra bit of excitement to the final sixth of the season

Dave: Without Costa and Remy last week, it was a bit of a Chelsea Stagger, but as one of the big teams actually playing in GW33 and the fact that they have a double in GW34, now is the time to stock up. Hazard is the eternal FPL saviour, if he isn’t in your team already you don’t deserve to get him now. He takes penalties, he scores from open play and as he showed against QPR, has an assist in him too. With games against United and one of the DGW against Arsenal it’s possibly one of the only times I wouldn't recommend doubling up on Chelsea defenders, instead I say go for goals, Remy should be back and there’s a whole host of midfield options to choose from. Getting your Chelsea fix this week means that you can focus on adding Liverpool players to your teams for their fantastically easy DGW next week.

Joe: I would say that if you can field a full 11 this weekend try and save your transfer to enable getting 2 Liverpool players without a points hit next week. That said, if transfers are needed, look to the revitalised Fàbregasat £9.2m and with 15.3% ownershipacross active teams. This weekend he has a tough assignment against United however, with a DGW looming, and the potential for a Chelsea set-piece goal, he is a solid option. Leicester’s Argentinian general, Esteban Cambiasso, is another option. The 2010 Champions League winner has been playing out of his skin in recent weeks to try help Leicester avoid the drop and, with last week’s dramatic win against Sunderland, they go into Saturday’s home game against Swansea (and DGW34) with their tails up. At just £4.7m, the combative midfielder frees up a lot of cash as the season rolls towards a hectic conclusion.
