Back after a week’s hiatus, it seems Arsenal cost a lot of people entering the 100 club this week. Aguero is playing like an Argentinian Harry Kane, Tom Cleverley has outscored Xavi and Iniesta combined this season in just his last 3 games, Ashley Young is United’s main attacking threat for FPL points and Leicester City are seemingly making a late push for Europe… What the hell happened while we were away?!
Gunning for 2nd
After a misfiring Arsenal stuttered against a Fabiański-inspired Swansea on the eve of their double gameweek, they now find themselves back in a race for not 4th. A trip to Old Trafford followed by a home game against Sunderland sees Arsenal knowing 2 wins would get them automatic qualification for the Champions League with a game to spare/give Abou Diaby a run-out in.
Dave:I’m going big on the DGW this week, aiming for at least 5 players. Don’t think it will surprise anyone that 3 of those will be Arsenal players. I think the fixtures lend themselves to any combination of Arsenal players, potentially a tight game with United followed by an open, attacking display against Sunderland. First player up for recommendation this week is a man who has already scored at Old Trafford this season, Nacho Monreal. It seems Arsene Wenger had been searching for a left back that was better, Spanishier and mini-Peter-Crouchier than Kieran Gibbs and he has found him in Nacho Monreal. I think he has genuine captaincy potential this week (I’m a sucker for a DGW defender) as I would not be surprised to see a clean sheet in both games with two resolute defensive displays. At £4.9mand a genuine differential with ownership of 3.1% overall, he might just nick in behind Antonio Valencia and pick up some points at the other end of the field. Next up is Mesut Özil, a man owned by NONE of the top 1000.He takes the occasional set piece, he’s involved in everything going forward and although he does have a reluctancy to shoot, he can clock up some serious assists over two games. The sticking point is the price tag, he needs more points to justify £8.9mbut with games against Sunderland and West Brom after the United game, there is potential to go full-Sergio.
Joe:It may seem obvious but one has to have Alexis Sánchezfor the DGW. Surprisingly only 39.4%of active players own the Chilean who has been outstanding in his debut year for Arsenal. A Carlos Kickaball he is not. At £11.5m, Sánchez and his short-shorts don’t come cheap but he is nailed on captain-material for the last DGW of the season. Next up is a slightly left-field (for me) choice/gamble in Theo Walcott. The speedy winger has come off the bench in his last 3 games, however I have a feeling that Monsieur Wenger will want to try-out the Englishman in a more advanced role as the season draws to a close. At £8.2mand owned by just 0.2%of active players, the formerly indispensable (FPL-wise) Walcott may just offer managers like me an explosive differential as they round off their quest for the Top 300 (or Top 100,000 if you’re Dave)
Sunderland - Worth the Investment?
Currently just above the relegation zone, Sunderland will be looking to the DGW as a chance to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the relegation dogfighters. Buoyed (hopefully) by 7 points in their last 3 games, The Black Cats will be a team with their tails up and a surprising result or two in the DGW is not beyond the realms of possibility as Dick Advocaat's men look to secure safety.
Dave:We’ll keep it short and sweet. They have 2 games, that means a probable minimum of 4 points. Let’s face it, you could do worse. These guys have something to play for and they’re guaranteed the guts of 180 minutes of football. First up is Patrick van Aanholt, you can do a lot worse than spending £4.1m on a defender with two games who can chip in with an assist or two. I wouldn’t quite tip him up as much as Monreal for captain, I said I was a sucker but I’m not that much of a sucker. Secondly, since this is an algorithm based website, I’m going to get slightly scientific with you for this next tip. It is scientifically proven that if you give an infinite amount of Connor Wickhams 180 minutes of football, he might just do something. No frills, no fuss, no stats to back this one up, he did it last year against some big teams and I just really don’t like Jermaine Defoe... so Connor Wickham it is!
Joe: If, like me, you have the disappearing Kelvin Davis between the sticks you may want to consider Costel Pantilimonas a replacement for the season’s last few games. The lanky Romanian is a save points magnet with 27 so far this season and at£4.5m, he doesn't Costel that much.... yeah I'll get my coat. Another option (As FFFix’s lawyers don’t want us talking about Adam Johnson) is Jordi Gómez. Rivalling Nacho Monreal as the most un-Spanish Spaniard ever, the penalty-taking former Wigan ace has 2 goals and an assist in his last 2 games. At just £5.1m,and live-team ownership of 1.1%, he is a handy cut-price differential DGW option, especially if you have a bit of spare cash to upgrade your 5th midfielder.
So that's it for our penultimate column of the year. After the 100 club-less disappointment of GW36, hopefully we all get a massive DGW and finish the season in style. Check us out next week when we discuss the utter lunacy of the final day and some picks that are so left field that they have to be right.
