The Fantasy Football Prefix - Gameweek 32 - Saturday

11 April 2015

With the madness of DGW31 barely having died down, normal service was resumed on Saturday lunchtime with just the usual ten fixtures for us to get to grips with. With Agüero blanking AGAIN last time out, many more managers had finally lost patience and transferred him out. But where was the value to be found? Well, if you're going solely on form then you would had to have considered Benteke, Murray or Gomis. But with Benteke not playing next week, that would perhaps have been a foolhardy transfer. The most popular move was to bring Chelsea striker Loïc Remy in. With the news Costa was definitely out for at least a month, and with Chelsea playing twice in DGW34, it was possibly the smart move to make.
I guess the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so join me as I attempt to once again create this Suffix article live, as the action unfolds...

SWA v EVE
As alluded to above, Bafétimbi Gomis is a striker in form, so the 20,000 managers who brought him in this week will have been gutted when he left the field injured after only 16 minutes whilst attempting to put the Swans ahead. Not a great start to the week for some. Leon Osman went off injured shortly afterwards, to be replaced by Pienaar. Swansea had a great goal disallowed for a foul on Baines in the build-up. It was a typical Jonjo Shelvey long range thunderbolt.

Aaron Lennon scored towards the end of the first half, with his second away goal in succession, as he controlled James McCarthy's pass and fired past Fabianski. The second half was more of the same, and Marvin Emnes - on for Gomis - started to get some luck as he battled with Coleman. The referee awarded a penalty after Emnes jostled with Coleman as the ball was going out of play and a handball was spotted.

Shelvey sent Tim Howard the wrong way for his third goal of the season, whilst Emnes was not rewarded with the assist points. There were no further clear cut chances, although Mirallas had a long range effort saved in injury time. Bonus points were awarded as follows:

McCarthy - 3pts
Shelvey - 2pts
Lennon - 1pt

SOU v HUL
With over 50% of managers owning Saints defender Nathaniel Clyne, the news he had been dropped to the bench caused much head scratching and disbelief. Ronald Koeman chose to go with Maya Yoshida in this potential banana skin against a Hull side very much in a fight for survival. Bruce's side started well, with Sone Aluko looking the most likely to do something for the visitors. Graziano Pellè missed a great chance in the 20th minute to end his barren spell, but shot straight at Steve Harper in the Hull goal.

James Ward-Prowse came on at halftime for Victor Wanyama and ten minutes later he placed the ball on the penalty spot after Shane Long had been brought down by his former team mate Alex Bruce. Long poked his tongue out at the St Mary's crowd, proving where his loyalties firmly lie. JWP put the spot kick beyond the reach of Harper to score his first of the season.

It could be said that Hull were unfortunate not to be level as Davis saved well from Aluko before Bertrand cleared a shot off the line, but luck was not with Hull. Southampton put the game beyond their reach in the 81st minute when Pellè ended his goal drought that stretched back to 20 December. He still has nine goals and an ownership percentage of 10.7% The pass for the goal came from Morgan Schneiderlin. The game finished 2-0 which was all the more annoying for all of those Clyne owners.

Alderweireld - 3pts
Yoshida - 2pts
Fonte & Schneiderlin - 1pt

TOT v AVL
Harry Kane kept the armband, both in the real world, and in the majority of fantasy teams. Hat-trick hero Christian Benteke arrived at White Hart Lane full of the joys of spring and eager to repay the faith his new manager has shown in resurrecting his season. It was clear from the first minute that Villa - and Sherwood - WANTED this more.

He had set them up well, and the midfield easily had the beating of Mason and Bentelab. Spurs were fielding a makeshift defence with Chiriches in particular looking like the weak link. The visitors inevitably found a way through with Bacuna slinging in a cross for Benteke (who else?) to head in off Vorm's post.

Spurs continued to look Spursy, and they went in at the break glad of the chance to regroup. In the second half it was more of the same, with Harry Kane almost anonymous until the hour mark when a shot from him scraped over the bar. In fact, it was probably Danny Rose of all people who seemed most likely to score, but it wasn't to be.there was time for Carlos Sánchez to see red, but Spurs weren't able to take any kind of advantage.

Villa were able to see the game out for three precious points, and the many, many managers who handed Kane the armband were left regretting their decision. But come on...if anyone knew how to drill their defence on how to handle him, it was Tim Sherwood. It all seems so obvious in hindsight doesn't it?

Benteke - 3pts
Guzan - 2pts
Baker - 1pt

SUN v CRY
Sunderland, fresh from another victory over Newcastle, hosted a Palace team that had despatched Manchester City last time out. So, with 22 players full of confidence and who knew how to win games, it seemed odd that this was such a drab boring affair. The first half can be summed up by stoppages, fouls and yellow cards as Rodwell, Cattermole and Dann all got their names taken.
Something obviously happened at half time in the visitors dressing room though. Perhaps Alan Pardew put something in the tea? Whatever it was, a totally different Palace side emerged back onto the pitch at the Stadium of Light. A few minutes after the restart Yannick Bolasie came alive.
First he sent over a cross for Glenn Murray to score his sixth goal in seven games. Good news for the 22k who brought him in this week. Murray then returned the favour, nodding down a ball into Bolasie's path for him to shoot past Pantilimon and double the visitors lead. In next to no time Bolasie was celebrating his second as he shoved John O'Shea aside to make it 3-0. Jedinak was awarded the assist in his first game back after four games out.

Bolasie completed his 11 minute hat-trick when he received another ball from Murray and managed to steer it home, despite slipping in the build-up. 24 FPL points is huge reward for the 1.8% of managers who own him, particularly the 3.3k who brought him in this week.

Sunderland grabbed a consolation with Connor Wickham spoiling the Palace clean sheet points in the 89th minute, with Van Aanholt claiming the assist points. Speroni had to be alert to tip an injury time effort from Van Aanholt onto the bar, and to be honest he was probably the only Sunderland player to emerge with any credit.

Bolasie - 3pts
Murray - 2pts
Wickham - 1pt

WBA v LEI

With Albion having leaked seven goals in their last two matches, and Leicester having conceded five in their previous two, this would be an unlikely fixture to predict for a 0-0. It took 8 minutes for that to prove to be the case. Darren Fletcher headed in his first goal for West Brom, taking advantage of poor marking and nodding in from Chris Brunt's cross.

Leicester got back on terms on 20 minutes, a free kick taken by Cambiasso was flicked on by Ulloa for David Nugent to score his second in the last three outings. Six minutes later Leicester were behind again, with Craig Gardner being allowed too much space and he volleyed home a ball from Brown Ideye.

It took until late in the second half for Leicester to find an equaliser. It came from the head of former Stoke man Robert Huth, who took advantage of substitute Wasilewski's assist after Albion failed to clear their lines.
The goal of the game - if not the day - was saved for injury time, and it could prove to be a huge goal for Leicester in their fight to stay up. Jamie Vardy robbed Gareth McAuley on the halfway line and sprinted towards the Albion goal before beating Boaz Myhill with a low shot. Cambiasso was awarded the assist. 3-2 the final score to the visitors.
Ten goals conceded in three games to a Tony Pulis defence. Hmm. Eight goals scored in three games to a Leicester team scrapping away down at the bottom and playing twice in DGW34. Anyone taking a punt on Nugent or Vardy?

Nugent - 3pts
Vardy - 2pts
Cambiasso - 1pt

WHU v STO
A glamour tie in nobody's books saw West Ham take on Stoke in a battle for mid-table mediocrity. Level on points at the start of the day, it was West Ham who seized the advantage with Aaron Cresswell scoring a cracking 25 yard free-kick after Enner Valencia was fouled in his first start for four games following injury.
Valencia troubled Stoke all through the first half, but Stoke gradually managed to grow into the game with Walters and Adam going close. Stoke had to make two changes as first Moses and then Wilson went off injured, being replaced by Diouf and Pieters. West Ham suffered their own injury blow when Sakho was subbed for Carlton Cole.

Diouf hit the post late in the second half, and Arnautovic had a goal ruled out for offside, but he got his reward deep in injury time when he slotted home a low shot, assisted by Ryan Shawcross. Honours even, with both teams “fighting” out to finish tenth.

Arnautovic - 3pts
Shawcross - 2pts
Cameron & Cresswell - 1pt

BUR v ARS
With a victory against Manchester City, and a 0-0 draw against Spurs in the last two games at Turf Moor, it was not as likely as a few weeks ago that this fixture would see a deluge of goals. Despite being an injury doubt, Koscielny took his place alongside Mertesacker - perhaps a signal that Wenger wasn't going to be taking this game lightly. Burnley - as usual - were unchanged.
With Cazorla making his 100th Premier League appearance being the talk on social media this morning, it went almost unnoticed that his midfield partner, Aaron Ramsey, was making his 150th appearance of an injury ravaged career.
It was the Welshman who opened the scoring following a penalty area melee that saw Sanchez (twice) and Giroud try their luck before it fell kindly to Ramsey to fire into the roof of the net. No assist was awarded.
Trippier and Cazorla both tried their luck with free kicks in the first half, but got no joy from Ospina and Heaton respectively. With Coquelin on top of his game, Burnley struggled to get past Arsenal's back line, and Burnley's defensive organisation proved difficult for the Gunners to penetrate. Giroud was unable to add to his fabulous run of scoring for six games in a row. 1-0 the final score, Arsenal now four points behind Chelsea, and Aaron Ramsey having now scored or assisted in half of their ten goals since his return from injury.

Ramsey - 3pts
Mertesacker - 2pts
Monreal & Koscielny - 1pt

So, there we have it. Another blank for Kane (will we see an exodus of dumping like has happened with Agüero?) Murray and Benteke continue to enjoy an end of season run of form. Bolasie without doubt the man of the day, but Vardy with the goal of the day. Join me for Part 2 of the Suffix tomorrow. In the meantime, feel free to leave a comment below if you like.
