Today's fixtures consisted of the three teams who were all in Europa League action at the back end of last week. This competition invariably creates some kind of hangover when clubs competing in it return to league action at the weekend. Would this happen today? Let's find out as I once again write this article live, as the matches are played out.
Lunchtime kick-offs are notorious for disappointing FPL returns - or certainly that's how I personally view them. They are usually low scoring affairs, if you conveniently ignore Agüero's four goals vs Spurs back in GW8! This was why I personally went for Hazard over Kane for my captain this week, but the (not quite) England striker is in scintillating form, and was a popular pick for the armband. The team news revealed Christian Eriksen was dropped to the bench, no doubt to safeguard him a little for the League Cup final next week. As the match began, it was perhaps obvious all of the Spurs players had one eye on Wembley as they fell well below their current standards. West Ham took the lead with Cheikhou Kouyaté scoring his 2nd in 3 games, and at under £5m maybe playing his way into some peoples squads for next week? Aaron Cresswell provided the assist. Diafra Sakho added the second (and his 8th of a stop-start season). Maybe it was the fear of seeing Matic sent off yesterday, and his subsequent Cup Final suspension, but Spurs really looked poor. That was until Lamela's shot was cleared by Adrián only as far as Danny Rose who scored. Spurs are this seasons masters of the late goal, and their never say die attitude came to the fore again. Song brought down Kane, who took the resulting penalty himself. Adrián saved, but Kane finished at the second attempt with 96 minutes on the clock. In one of those bizarre quirks of FPL scoring, Kane ended up with only two points for the goal, after losing two points for missing the spot kick initially. If another player had taken it (Soldado?) he would have gained more points for the assist. The only real winner was keeper Adrián, who despite conceding two goals, finished with 8 points. 2-2 the final score.
The second game of the afternoon saw Everton's Romelu Lukaku no doubt buoyed by his Europa League hat trick, and hoping to kick start his season against lowly Leicester. The first half was truly non-eventful with Everton, like Spurs before them, seemingly suffering from the post-European hangover. The second half started brighter, but it took until just before the hour mark for the opening goal to come. It seems like an age ago when Steven Naismith was in pretty much everyone's early season FPL team, after goals in the first three games of the season. This was his first strike since his goal in the draw against Manchester City back in Gameweek 21 though. Lukaku laid on the assist for his partner. Leicester fought back and duly equalised via substitute David Nugent's first touch. 7 minutes later, veteran midfielder Esteban Cambiasso put the Foxes 2-1 ahead. Both assists were provided by Jamie Vardy. Just as it looked like Pearson's men were heading for an invaluable away win, Lukaku's diving header from Atsu's cross came off Matthew Upson. This unfortunate own goal came with only two minutes remaining. For Leicester, this draw will feel like a defeat. For Everton, this needs to serve as a wake up call. If they don't start getting more ruthless, they could get dragged into the relegation fight. 2-2 not really much use to either team in the grand scheme of things.
Liverpool took their Southampton old boys on a trip down to their former South Coast stomping ground. No place for Rickie Lambert, but Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren started, the latter due to a hip injury to Sakho. The real surprise prior to kick off was the news that Daniel Sturridge was dropped to the bench. With Balotelli still not being trusted despite his recent crucial goals, Raheem Sterling started as the furthest man forward. The game was barely 3 minutes old when Phillipe Coutinho picked up the ball from Markovic, turned, and unleashed a 30 yard screamer that went in off the crossbar. Stunning. The first half then consisted of two - arguably three - Southampton penalty claims, with referee Kevin Friend doing a Kevin Friend and ignoring them all. Sturridge made his appearance just after the hour mark, but it was Raheem Sterling who made the game safe. In the 73rd minute, Saints defender Matt Targett's attempted clearance went straight to Sterling, who lashed the ball past Fraser Forster. The game ended 2-0 to the visitors, making this Liverpool's fifth straight away clean sheet. For Southampton, this could be the moment they look back on at the end of the season when their Top 4 ambitions derailed. For those managers still holding Graziano Pellè, they probably won't need reminding that this was his ninth league game in a row without a goal. His last contribution (other than appearance points) came with an assist back in GW21.
Gameweek 26 came to an end with the natural order of the Premier League looking like restoring itself with Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United in the Top 4, with Liverpool now only a point behind Southampton who cling to the 5th spot.
Next weekend sees no game for Chelsea, Leicester, Spurs and QPR due to the League Cup final. Spurs and QPR will play their match the following week (meaning a double gameweek for them). Meanwhile, it was confirmed this week that Chelsea and Leicester will not fulfill their fixture until Gameweek 34 in April.
This means Gameweek 27 will possibly be a chance for those with the planning foresight to make up some ground if they can field at least 10 - and preferably 11 - players. For those who don't plan ahead, they are likely to get caught out. Ivanovic has been transferred IN by over 6000 managers since his goal yesterday, only to end up on the bench when those managers realise Chelsea aren't playing.
Hope you enjoyed the Suffix again this weekend, see you next time!
