The Fantasy Football Suffix - GW36 Monday

11 May 2015

With a low overnight gameweek average for many managers – mainly due to the majority of the points scorers being untrendy low ownership players – it was up to the big guns of Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal to do the business on Sunday and Monday. The action started at the Etihad, as City welcomed a QPR side hoping to avoid becoming the second team to be relegated from this year’s Premier League.

MCY v QPR

The overwhelming choice of captain for this week was the bang in form Sergio Aguero. With five goals in his last four games, he quickly made in six in five when he opened the scoring with barely four minutes on the clock. He received the ball 40 yards from goal and the QPR defence just parted in front of him as he lifted the ball over Rob Green. QPR were nearly back on terms after 20 minutes, but Charlie Austin’s effort was ruled out for offside. City punished this just after the half hour with Kolarov scoring his second in three games with a superb free kick after a foul on Aguero, who was awarded the assist.

The third goal was gifted to City as Yun Suk-Young failed to intercept a ball from David Silva, instead allowing it to roll under his foot and straight to Aguero, who set off on another long run before firing past Green. FPL managers went into meltdown as it appeared that Silva would not be awarded the assist, however, the mistake was later rectified. Aguero’s hat-trick came courtesy of the penalty spot after Silva was bundled over by Matt Phillips, and the Argentine made no mistake.

Aguero got his second assist of the game after knocking a ball from Bony into James Milner who scored his fourth of the season. The rout was completed in the 87th minute after Bony made a cheeky back heel into the path of Silva who took the ball round Green and scored to make it six without reply. In terms of fantasy returns, this was a stunning day for those who own Aguero, made even better if he was your captain. 23 points became 46 points for many. If you doubled up with Silva as well, it was a truly wondrous occasion! It was no surprise where the bonus points ended up:

Aguero – 3pts

Silva – 2pts

Kolarov – 1pt

CHE v LIV

Liverpool had the dubious honour of forming a guard of honour for the newly crowned Premier League champions at the ground where their title dreams were smashed last season. Chelsea gave a debut to Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Kurt Zouma was preferred to Gary Cahill, while Remy eventually took his place up front. Only five weeks too late for those that had drafted him into their team after the injury to Diego Costa back in gameweek 31. It was the Chelsea captain, John Terry, who scored the opener with his fifth of the season, heading home a corner from Fabregas. The Spaniard was perhaps lucky to even still be on the field after a terrible challenge in the opening minutes on Raheem Sterling. The referee deemed it only worthy of a yellow, but people have walked for less.

Liverpool were back level just before the break after a free kick sent in by Jordan Henderson was nodded past Courtois by Steven Gerrard who had drifted away from his marker. Two goals in his last two games now for the Reds captain who is aiming to leave the Premier League on a high, despite a disappointing couple of years for both himself, and his club. This was how the score remained with Chelsea perhaps understandably not bothered about upping the tempo after the title has already been secured. Liverpool on the other hand have it all to do if they want to pip Manchester United to next year’s Champions League.

Gerrard – 3pts

Henderson – 2pts

Terry – 1pt

ARS v SWA

All the pre-match talk was solely of how many Arsenal would win this by. Many managers have already loaded up on the maximum number of Gunners allowed in preparation for next week’s double gameweek. It was a little bit disrespectful perhaps to discount a Swansea side who are aiming for their highest placed League finish and a possible route into Europe as worthwhile opponents. Admittedly, they set up to defend in numbers, and with no recognised striker in their starting line-up they were out to frustrate and stifle Arsenal.

And so it proved to pass, in possibly the worst 45 minutes of Premier League football all season, in which nothing worthy of note happened. It didn’t get a lot better after the break, with Arsenal’s first shot on target not coming until after an hour when Fabianski saved from Giroud. From then on it was all about the former Arsenal keeper, who kept out a succession of shots from Cazorla, Ramsey, Sanchez and substitute Walcott. Then the moment nobody had even considered; Swansea scored. It took goal line technology to prove it, but Bafetimbi Gomis, on as a late sub, headed home a cross from the tricky Jefferson Montero at the back post. The Swans held on for an unlikely victory, which frustrated most fantasy managers – particularly those who had captained Sanchez over Aguero following his 15 point haul last time out. They were rewarded with just appearance points this time out.

Fabianski – 3pts

Fernandez – 2pts

Gomis – 1pt

That concludes the action for gameweek 36. Next time out is the third and final double of the season with both Arsenal and Sunderland playing Manchester United and Leicester respectively before going head-to-head on Wednesday 20 May.
