FPL Mid-Priced Midfielders: A Comparison

Mid-Priced Midfielder Stats Comparison for 2023/24

James Maddison

Maddison started the 2023/24 campaign strong but was not the same player after his return from injury in the second half of the campaign. As the above image from our Fix Comparison Matrix feature shows, he relied largely on his creativity for returns with 0.4 FPL assists per game (second), as well as 2.4 attempted assists (third). He ranked fifth for shots (2.0) and fourth for shots on target (SoT) (0.8). However, he was excluded from England's Euro squad, so has benefitted from a full Summer of training, and he could be back to his best for the start of the season.

Bruno Fernandes

One of the most secure players in the league for Expected Minutes, Fernandes averaged a healthy 4.7 FPL points per game and the changes to the Bonus Points System (BPS) are likely to favour the Portuguese international even further. He is second for shots (2.7) and SoT (1.2), while being top for attempted assists (3.3) and 'big chances' (BC) created (0.7). He was often let down by the poor finishing from his teammates and if United‘s attackers can start finishing the numerous chances he creates, he could be a top FPL asset for the 2024/25 season, especially since he has penalty duties as well.

Anthony Gordon

Gordon had his breakthrough season in 2023/24 with an impressive 5.2 FPL points per game (second). However, most of his returns came in home matches and the 23-year-old will be looking to improve on those numbers. He is top for FPL assists (0.5) and is ranked third for both shots (2.3) and SoT (0.9). It is interesting to note that despite being fifth for attempted assists (1.6), he still managed an FPL assist every other game, with some of these being penalties won. His BC involvement of 1.0 (0.5 BC created + 0.5 BC) indicates that he could be a top pick this season as well.

Martin Ødegaard

Top of the comparison for FPL points per game (5.3), Ødegaard managed a FPL return every other game (0.2 goals + 0.3 assists) and was a consistent name on the Arsenal team sheet. He is ranked fourth for shots (2.2) and fifth for SoT (0.7), with many of these attempts from long range. This is evidenced in his BC numbers where he was afforded only 0.2 BC per game. His creativity numbers were excellent though, he is second for both attempted assists (2.9) and BC created (0.5). With Saka costing £1.5m more, the Norwegian international could be a great route into the Arsenal attack.

Eberechi Eze

Eze missed a large chunk of the 2023/24 season with injuries but he thrived in the final few weeks under new manager Glasner. The England international is top of the comparison for goals (0.4), shots (1.3) and SoT (1.3) which indicates that he will fare well under the new BPS. His BC involvement numbers are healthy as well, he averaged 0.4 BC and 0.3 BC created. However, it is worth mentioning that Mateta is representing France at the Olympic games over the Summer, and the Frenchman's potential absence could hinder his potential.

Who has the best Fixtures?

Fixture Difficulty Ratings Gameweek 1-8 for the 2024/25 season

As the above image from our Fixture Difficulty Ratings feature shows, amongst the aforementioned players' teams only Arsenal and Newcastle make the top-eight. Newcastle have a good start to the season in particular with their first three games against Southampton, Bournemouth and Spurs looking particularly enticing. Arsenal have home games against Wolves, Brighton, Leicester and Southampton in their first eight, but their away trips to Villa, Man. City and Spurs look more tricky. Liverpool's duo of Diaz and Jota were not included in the comparison due to uncertainty of minutes but if either can nail down a spot over preseason, they could be great picks.

What do the Projections say?

FPL Mid-Priced Midfielder Point Projections 2024/25

As the above image from our Predicted Points & Stats feature shows, De Bruyne (43.1) and Foden (41.0) sit on top, as expected, but neither were included in the comparison due to transfer uncertainty and late return from international duty respectively.

Ødegaard sits in third (36.0), Fernandes (26.8) and Maddison (24.9) in seventh and eighth while Gordon (24.5) and Eze (22.8) are 10th and 11th.

Based on the above analysis, Ødegaard looks like the best pick between £8.0- £9.0m while Gordon looks to be the best in the £7.0- £7.5 bracket.
