With 74 points in the opening Gameweek, Corey is a good 10 points above the average. There are some big scores floating around, with many highly owned players doing well but, with no major surgery required, Corey will be satisfied with a solid start to the season.

The first Gameweek was all about small margins. Two contested penalties (one for Brighton and one not given for Wolves) allowed nice scores from highly owned players (Pedro and Manchester United defenders). On the other end, gaping goal mouth misses by Matty Cash and Bryan Mbeumo cost Ollie Watkins a potential 4 points, Mbeumo a potential 8, and Rico Henry a potential 3. Add in the Gabriel benching which some people reacted to (I couldn't have even if I had wanted to as I was working at the time...time zones and all) resulted in a mediocre Gameweek for me. Not terrible, but certainly could have been better.

Gameweek 2 and beyond

Corey’s initial plan was to roll his transfer into Gameweek 3, allowing him more data to inform his decisions and to potentially re-distribute budget to enable his moves.

Gabriel (£5.0m) being benched was not part of the plan and with 73 consecutive starts prior to Saturday morning, Corey – and the 2.7m managers who selected Gabriel – are well within their rights to feel aggrieved at him being benched in favour of a bizarre tactical change which saw Thomas Partey (£5.0m) play as an inverted right-back.

Looking ahead, Corey will be keeping hold of Gabriel and seeing what happens in Gameweek 2. Arsenal looked exposed on their right-flank, particularly with 1 vs 1s, and they lacked the aerial threat from set-pieces that Gabriel provides. In addition, an unfortunate injury could see Jurriën Timber (£5.0m) sidelined for a while and this, again, increases Gabriel’s prospects of starting in the next match.

With his free transfer rolled to Gameweek 3, Corey will be looking to switch either Pervis Estupiñán (£5.0m) or Gabriel (if he continues to be benched) for Ben Chilwell (£5.5m) who had an impressive start to the season with a scintillating display against Liverpool.

With no money in the bank, Corey will have to make another change to free up enough budget for this switch. One area Corey is looking at is in midfield:

Next Gameweek I am almost certainly rolling my transfer. With Timber's injury, I expect Gabriel to come back into the starting 11 but, even if not, I can hold another Gameweek. I didn't see anything else that requires immediate attention. Plus, my planned move in Gameweek 3 is to bring Chilwell in for Estupinan/Gabriel. That will require me to downgrade somewhere else. My two primary candidates are Watkins (for Jackson) and Odegaard (likely Maddison but Richarlison and Eze are interesting options as well). In either case, I will be looking at then moving towards Newcastle defenders in Gameweek 5 with Botman and Trippier the obvious targets.
