If you are the sort of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) manager who enjoys going against the grain – or takes satisfaction from finding hidden gems before the crowd – then lowly selected players (differentials) can often provide value and offer a source of points which won’t be shared by many other managers. As long as the player picks are justifiable, differentials can give you an edge over your mini-league rivals.

If you are looking for a solid option for your back line, but don’t want to splash the cash on Kieran Trippier (£7.0m), then a smart alternative could be Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m). He may not have the assist potential of Trippier, but he is a reliable defensive option, being almost guaranteed to start for a Liverpool team who are about to embark on a great run of fixtures.
While he may not have scored yet this season, we know the Dutch international has the capability, especially from set pieces. For this reason (amongst others), he is ranked the 3rd best defender in the game by Player Points Projections for projected points over the next six Gameweeks.
With 45 points already – including 30 in his last four appearances (average of 7.5 per game) – Anthony Gordon (£5.6m) is a great pick for FPL managers who are looking to release budget for other endeavours, without seeing points returns dry up.
Gordon is ranked 3rd amongst midfielders for FPL assists (per 90) averaging 0.59 so far this season. In the next three Gameweeks, Newcastle face Wolves and Bournemouth; two fixtures in which returns could be very forthcoming.
If you are in the market for a one-week punt, then it may not get much better than Dominic Solanke (£6.4m).
With 4 open play goals already this season, Solanke is ranked fifth amongst forwards for shots in the box (21) according to Opta Stats Sandbox. He faces a Burnley side who have conceded 23 goals (ranked 2nd worst), have zero clean sheets, and have conceded 104 shots in the box (ranked 4th worst).
Owners should note that after the Burnley fixture, Bournemouth then go on to face both Manchester City and Newcastle, before Sheffield United in Gameweek 13, so a plan will need to be made for this period.
