Andrew GW9 points

It has been an up-and-down sort of season for our newest Elite XI manager, Andrew Neave. We covered Andrew's Wildcard back in Gameweek 5 and now get a chance to catch up with how progress has been since he hit the button.

A 360k rank rise is usually cause for celebration, but Andrew is finding it hard to get overly enthused about his green arrow, with his overall rank still outside 1m; far away from the lofty heights to which he has become accustomed.

Strategy change?

Andrew's usual strategy is to be calm, patient and to always do the sensible thing when it comes to transfers, however, his current predicament is making him think that perhaps the time has come to change things up a little bit.

I find myself in a classic "tortoise vs hare" situation. I've plodded along, heavy shell on my back, without going anywhere quickly. All it takes is that one great Gameweek. But how do we find that one big score? Do we take a risk and go with a left-field pick? Will captaining someone that most fantasy managers aren't considering prove to be that metaphorical hare that helps us sprint ahead? I've always played safe and it's a strategy that's done well for me in the past. But I'm asking myself now whether I need to adapt. Do I need to do something different in order to "kick start" my season?

Andrew has opted to go without a number of popular players in order to maintain his squad structure. Ollie Watkins (£8.3m) is currently owned by 36.9% of all managers – and over 65% of managers in the Top 100k (Live Insight). The same can be said for Kieran Trippier (£7.0m) who is owned by just under half of all FPL managers and 64.1% of the Top 100k. Both players have punished Andrew in recent weeks, but the damage has been somewhat mitigated by owning Julián Álvarez (£7.1m).

Alvarez has somewhat flown under the radar thanks to Watkins' recent form, and with Manchester United's struggling defence, and a brilliant fixture at home to Bournemouth in Gameweek 11, I'm quite comfortable to have him as my "risky" alternative to Watkins.

Bringing Arsenal attackers back into the mix will be a popular strategy ahead of Gameweek 10, as Arsenal's fixtures turn a corner. The Gunners face both Sheffield United and Burnley in the next three Gameweeks, and Bukayo Saka (£8.5m) is already one of the most transferred in players ahead of Gameweek 10. But Andrew has taken note of some other fixture swings.

Brighton's fixtures could offer up points over the next few weeks. After a fantastic start to the season, they've been quickly forgotten, but it's worth remembering they've played Man City, Liverpool, Villa, Manchester United and Newcastle over the past six Gameweeks. Rotation is always a concern with De Zerbi's team, but with injuries mounting up, his hand may be forced, and we may see a bit more consistency with his team sheets. Mitoma looks a great option, and with Foden flattering to deceive, he may be my number one target.

While progress has been slow for Andrew, his current trajectory would see him reach the Top 150k by Christmas. Changing strategy and playing more aggressively may be tempting at this juncture, as Andrew will want to propel himself up the ranks quickly. But doing so may have the opposite effect, especially if the highly owned players continue to return. What will it be for Andrew: the tortoise or the hare?
