Corey is one of just two of our Elite XI managers who played their Wildcard in Gameweek 10. After a difficult start to the season – shared by many! – Corey was already on the rise with 7 out of 8 green arrows since Gameweek 6. The Wildcard in Gameweek 10 feels wonderfully timed, with Corey managing to give his natural momentum a lift at the crucial moment. Ranked 1.2m in Gameweek 9, Corey’s well-played Wildcard has seen him rise to 533k.
Five straight green arrows have me around 500k overall. Not great, but certainly better than I was two months ago. My Wildcard has generally been fine and I have avoided major injuries, leaving my future plans still mostly intact. I head into Gameweek 15 with two free transfers and £0.7m in the bank.
Corey’s plans for the future involve balancing a number of upcoming issues. Fixture swings for his defence, blank Gameweek 18, and a potential double in Gameweek 20. In addition, there will be player absences for international competitions in Africa and Asia which require consideration.
On top of all this, Corey will be keeping an eye on Newcastle backline injuries as the returns of Sven Botman (£4.5m) and/or Dan Burn (£4.5m) could impact the minutes of Jamaal Lascelles (£4.1m). Add in potential yellow card accumulation suspensions – and a loaded festive calendar – and there is plenty to consider as we head towards December!
My ideal plan would be to bring in Flekken to improve my goalkeeper situation – and add another potential double Gameweek 20 player – move on from Guehi and Tsimikas due to fixture swings, and prepare for Alvarez and Walker for double Gameweek 20. I am pretty locked in on Reece James to replace Guehi as Chelsea’s fixtures from Gameweeks 17-21 are about as good as it can get. Obviously, I need funds to cover this upgrade.
The problem with freeing up funds is that most of the highly owned premium options are still returning. One option Corey is considering is to move on from Saka in Gameweek 16. Arsenal have been notably mediocre in attack recently, even though Saka has been ticking along with FPL points. It remains unclear if he will take every penalty, and Arsenal’s fixtures are only average between Gameweek 16-18. Saka certainly isn’t a problem, but he is currently the ideal option to fund Corey’s upgrades.
The question is who to bring in [for Saka]? My primary options are Sterling, Gordon, and Bowen. Bowen is my preferred option if healthy, but that remains to be seen. Sterling has amazing fixtures but is on four yellow cards, and could be under threat of rotation once Nkunku comes back. He’s also not exactly been impressive from an underlying data perspective. Gordon has great fixtures in Gameweeks 17-19, but terrible fixtures in 16 and 20-22. Newcastle also have multiple ongoing competitions and continue to struggle with depth, so fatigue is a major concern.
Beyond this, Corey also has an eye on factors outside of the Premier League which could lead to squad issues amongst FPL managers who are not planning ahead.
I will be shipping out Mo Salah in Gameweek 20 to afford upgrading Archer to Alvarez. With Salah heading to African Cup of Nations the next week this is a no brainer. That would then give me five players for a potential double in Gameweek 20: Haaland, Alvarez, Walker from City, and Mbuemo and Flekken from Brentford. In Gameweek 21, I will have to move on from both Mbeumo and Son as they will both miss a few Gameweeks away with their national teams.
