A green arrow in Gameweek 16 has offered a brief respite from a difficult patch in the season for Elite XI manager, Daniel Boije. As with so many managers, the injury which saw Erling Haaland (£14.0m) miss City’s fixture against Luton, ushered in Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) as captain – a timely reminder of the importance of selecting a good Vice Captain.
Amid growing rumours that Erling Haaland could be left out of the Manchester City squad, 56.9% of the Top 100k have Mohamed Salah as their Vice Captain?

Who is your VC?
In addition, Son Heung-min (£9.6m) who is owned by 36.4% of FPL managers – although this figure increases to 42.4% of managers in the Top 100k according to Live Insight – bagged his sixth double-digit haul of the season, helping Daniel break the Top 1m rank tier.
But prior to this, Daniel suffered three back-to-back red arrows, during a period which was characterised by injury problems.
A few weeks back, I had a clear plan for my squad and upcoming transfers. Then the injuries started piling up and this forced me to use all my available transfers on injured players for the last [few] Gameweeks. Here I am, still with Diaby in my starting 11 after already taking a hit for Dubravka last week. Now Haaland seems to be injured as well. Saying that, I know we are all in the same boat and things are possibly looking a bit better now.
Daniel is satisfied with his goalkeeping situation, although Martin Dubravka (£4.1m) could become an issue in January, should Newcastle dip into the transfer market to strengthen there. This is something which will have to be closely monitored.
Apart from one or two minor tweaks, Daniel is also happy with his defence and midfield. We asked what he had done differently compared to so many other managers who were struggling, particularly in defence.
Mainly because I have Pedro Porro and four other playing defenders. Pedro Porro looks very promising. Very attacking and on set pieces. Gabriel is a cheap way into the Arsenal defence. Tsimikas will become a problem soon but is fine for now. The Pinnock move a few weeks ago hasn’t worked so far. Taylor is just there for the price. I’m happy with my midfield except for Diaby. Seems he has lost his place already a few games ago. Son and Salah are going nowhere. Never really crossed my mind. Palmer is great value with Chelsea’s kind fixture run. Bowen is looking good for points and minutes, but West Ham are a bit inconsistent. My most likely move will be Diaby to Gordon.
What are your plans for Erling Haaland? 🤔
— Fantasy Football Fix (@FantasyFootyFix) December 12, 2023
Owned by 81.6% of all FPL players, the injury to Haaland could have significant ramifications for FPL managers across all rank tiers. With Pep Guardiola renowned for not being forthcoming with injury information (to put it mildly!), managers hoping for a straightforward and honest account of how long the Norwegian will be out, may be disappointed. This may well be one of those moments where we must make a personal judgement and hope we are correct.
No matter what happens, it looks almost certain that Haaland will miss the Crystal Palace fixture in Gameweek 17. After that, Manchester City (along with Brentford) blank in Gameweek 18. If Haaland’s ‘stress fracture’ improves by then, he could be back for a nice run of fixtures, which is likely to include a double Gameweek in 20. Of course, the injury may turn out to be longer term, in which case holding him would be an unwise usage of budget.
If Haaland is declared injured for the weekend he would miss at least both Gameweek 17 and Gameweek 18. If this is the case, I will probably take a hit to replace him and Diaby. Initial plans are to bring in Gordon, or Saka, together with Solanke. Great fixtures upcoming for an in-form Bournemouth and Solanke has good stats, minutes and should be on penalties (if Bournemouth ever get one). It’s important to keep in mind that we [will] probably want Haaland back as soon as he is fit again, so the money shouldn’t be spread around the team too much.
