Alexander-Arnold tops the Stats Sandbox, shown below, for Gameweek 1 for xFPL with a score of 11.22. The right-back attempted three assists, two of which were classified as 'big chances' and he notched an 'Expected Assists' (xA) tally of 1.01.
Popular captain option Salah was in third with an xFPL score of 9.46, the Egyptian landed three shots on target and was afforded two 'big chances'. He also created a 'big chance' which Jota scored from. No player took more shots than Eze (seven), however just four of these were in the box which meant a low xFPL score of just 4.26.
Andreas was the most creative player with six attempted assists but none of these was classified as a 'big chance' created. He registered an xA of just 0.21 and a low 2.85 xFPL score. Saka's numbers also caught the eye, the England international took five shots and attempted as many assists, leading to an xFPL score of 8.82
xFPL is calculated primarily using expected goals (xG), assists (xA), which combine as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) involvements (xG + xA = xI), as well as expected clean sheets (xCS). These numbers are a result of underlying statistics (i.e. shot type and location will give a probability of scoring = xG). xFPL is the combination of these statistics and factors in appearance and bonus points to give an overall expected FPL point score.
As the below image from our Transfer Analytics feature shows, Mazraoui is the most popular transfer in ahead of Gameweek 2 with almost 250,000 FPL managers bringing in the defender already.
Havertz, Diogo J., Salah and Saka are also popular after finding the back of the net in Gameweek 1. Toney, Rodrigo and Trippier did not feature at all over the weekend and have been sold by nearly 350,000 FPL managers combined. The highly owned duo of Watkins and Palmer are also on the chopping block after their blanks.
Looking at the 'Top 10 forward transfer combinations', Isak is being sold for Haaland, Havertz and Welbeck, Newcastle played a large part of the game with 10 men so perhaps that decision is a bit kneejerk.
Amongst midfielders, Gordon, Eze and Diaz are being sold for Diogo J., the Portuguese international accounts for five of the top 10 midfielder transfer combinations. In defence, Quansah, Mykolenko and Barco are being shipped in droves for Mazraoui, Hall, Lewis and Robinson.
As the above image from our Opta Player Heatmaps feature shows, Diogo J. played just 78 mins compared to 90 for Díaz.
The Portuguese international took three shots in the box, and notched an 'Expected Goals' (xG) tally of 0.81. Meanwhile, Díaz took two shots in the box but landed none on target. However, the Colombian international did create three chances while Jota managed none. On the basis of this data, both look like good picks with Diogo J. marginally edging it due to more goal threat in a central role.
