It has been an extraordinary comeback for Elite XI manager, Phil Ampleford, who is currently celebrating his sixth consecutive green arrow since Gameweek 14. Ranked 5.1m in Gameweek 7, the turnaround has been quite spectacular.
Phil was one of the few Elite XI managers who held on to his Wildcard until Gameweek 17, a move which saw him rocket up the overall rankings, when he bagged 75 points and a Gameweek rank of 118k.
Like many of us that held our Wildcard until the latter stages of its use, selling Haaland for the Gameweek 18 blank, and then Wildcarding him back in was my plan. However, his injury represented an excellent opportunity to pull the trigger earlier. I could use the funds in the rest of the squad and get him back at a later date.
Before the injury to Erling Haaland (£13.9m), Phil had his eye on Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.4m) but always found himself £0.1m to £0.2m short of making the transfer. Selling Haaland on Wildcard meant an easy route to him and also enabled the acquisition of Heung-min Son (£9.9m). Spreading the funds may have been a little risky if Haaland came back quickly, but even in that scenario, Phil felt the potential points gained in the meantime would make it worthwhile.
I'm pleased with the Gameweek 17 Wildcard, fortunate with its timing, and the fact that Haaland is still out – although I suspected that may be the case. I was able to get in the likes of Trent, Gabriel, Son, Watkins, Solanke, and move for a couple of differentials in Gusto and Richarlison. As a result, I was able to get ahead of the game, which is what we all strive for in FPL.
Phil’s Wildcard planning has also allowed him to continue to roll transfers over. With two free transfers going into Gameweek 20, Phil plans to roll the second one again, which will help him address the sizeable gaps which will be left in his team when Salah and Son depart for their international tournaments in Gameweek 21.
Going forwards, I think Foden and Bowen are the best replacements for Salah and Son, with the funds left to be able to go Alvarez to Haaland when he's back fit. With a free transfer to burn in Gameweek 20, I may even sell Saka to Foden this week, then get Bowen and Saka/Odegaard in Gameweek 21. I think Foden has the stronger fixture in 20 and I may look at the opportunity to bring in Odegaard over Saka for the longer term.
