Midfielders at £8m and above - Expected FPL Points Review

As the below image from our Opta Stats Sandbox feature shows, Salah is head and shoulders above the rest for xFPL (187.28). The midfielder has registered an Expected Goals (xG) tally of 16.61, with Palmer (10.89) second, and B. Fernandes (6.44) third by a big margin.

Fantasy Premier League Expected Stats for Premium Midfielders

The Egyptian international is also top for Expected Assists (xA) (8.32), with Saka running him close (8.26) and Palmer in third (8.02).

With Saka's injury, it underlines how thin on the ground Premium midfield options are with Son (4.99), Foden (3.12), Ødegaard (2.95) and De Bruyne (1.94) all under 5.0 xG for the season so far.

What is xFPL?

xFPL is calculated primarily using expected goals (xG), assists (xA), which combine as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) involvements (xG + xA = xI), as well as expected clean sheets (xCS). These numbers are a result of underlying statistics (i.e. shot type and location will give a probability of scoring = xG). xFPL is the combination of these statistics and factors in appearance and bonus points to give an overall expected FPL point score.

Premium Midfielders - Underlying Numbers Compared

A look at the below image from the Fix Comparison Matrix once again underlines Salah's dominance. The Egyptian international is top for all attacking metrics, except attempted assists where Palmer (2.8) comes out on top. Saka is not included in the comparison for now due to his long-term injury.

Palmer is the clear second best performer, the England international is second for shots (3.5), shots on target (1.5) and 'big chances' (0.7).

Despite a string of starts recently, Foden's underlying numbers are still unimpressive. The midfielder is averaging a paltry 0.1 'big chances' per game and is landing just 0.6 attempts on target.

B. Fernandes' numbers do show encouraging signs, the Portuguese international is third for shots (2.8), attempted assists (2.3) and 'big chances' (0.5). The cheapest player in this price bracket, he could offer value if Man. United find form under Amorim.

Midfielders under £8m - Expected FPL Points Review

As the below image from our Opta Stats Sandbox feature shows, it is close at the top for xFPL with the trio of Mbeumo (113.60), Semenyo (105.26) and Gordon (101.80) significantly ahead of Johnson (90.50) in fourth.

Fantasy Premier League Expected Stats for Midfielders under 8m

Mbeumo's non-penalty xG of 4.41 is just 15th in this price bracket but with penalties, the Cameroon international is ranked fifth for xG (6.69). He is also second for xA (4.71).

Semenyo (9.18) is significantly ahead of the rest for xG (9.18), but has found the back of the net just five times. If he can improve his accuracy in the second half, he could be the budget midfielder to own.

Gordon is only fourth for FPL points (90), but second for xG (7.43) and 15th for xA (3.92). No midfielder in this price bracket has been afforded more 'big chances' than his 13.

Players going under the radar

As the below image from our Opta Stats Sandbox feature shows, Sávio finds himself in third for xA (4.84) with only Damsgaard, Mbeumo (nine) and Rice (11) creating more 'big chances' than his eight.

I. Sarr is also one to take note of, the Senegalese international is fourth for xA (4.71) despite playing just 1,271 minutes. He is also ranked eighth for 'big chances' (10).

Iwobi continues to be overlooked by FPL managers, the Nigerian international is fifth for xFPL (89.75) with healthy numbers for both xG (4.04) and xA (4.69).

Eze is ranked eighth for xG (no pen) (5.33) and has already delivered a goal and assist in his last two league outings.
