Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 22: Wildcard Algorithm XI

Fantasy Football Fix 17 Jan. 2024

The second Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Wildcard is now available to FPL managers and with injuries mounting up, it could be a good time to use it. In this blog, the best Wildcard team for Gameweek 22 as per our Fix Algorithm is analysed.

Goalkeepers

Instead of rotating Goalkeepers, the Fix Algorithm suggests playing Alisson every week. No goalkeeper has racked up more FPL points (77) than the Brazilian international this season and he has kept six clean sheets in 18 appearances. He has also racked up nine bonus points with only Leno, Neto (10 each) and Martinez (12) faring better. However, FPL managers should keep an eye on the Carabao Cup results, if Liverpool progress to the final then they might have a blank fixture in Gameweek 26.

Defence

The Algorithm continues to show faith in the Liverpool defence with Alexander-Arnold, no team has conceded fewer goals (18) than the Merseyside oufit and as the Stats Sandbox image below shows, they are third for shots in the box (SiB) conceded. Only Trippier (54) has created more chances than Alexander-Arnold (49) amongst defenders this season.

If Alexander-Arnold does not make the Gameweek 22 fixture against Chelsea, either Trippier or Estupiñán can deputise, the pair notched 16 assists combined last season and can always be backed for attacking returns irrespective of fixture. Andersen and Mitchell can be backed for a clean sheet against the league's lowest scorers Sheff. Utd. who have found the back of the net just 15 times.

Midfield

As the below image from our Fixture Analyser shows, Man. City have the best fixtures in the league over the next six Gameweeks with their double in Gameweek 26 and four home matches in as many Gameweeks. With uncertainty around De Bruyne's minutes, Foden is the pick from their midfield.

With nine goals and five assists this campaign, Palmer is probably the best value pick in the game at just £5.8m. Meanwhile, only B. Fernandes (55) and Trippier (54) have attempted more assists than Saka. Willian is a great fifth midfielder that can be rotated according to fixtures, at just £5.3m he facilitates a lot of spend in other areas. Gordon can be benched for the difficult away trip to Villa but Newcastle's fixtures after Gameweek 22 are great with the Magpies playing Luton, Forest and Bournemouth over the following three Gameweeks.

Forwards

The Algorithm prefers a double up on the Man. City forwards J. Alvarez and Haaland, with the assumption that the Norwegian international is fit for their Gameweek 22 fixture against Burnley. Depending on fitness news, FPL managers can choose to leave him in and let one of the subs come on or replace him with a placeholder like Solanke with cash in the bank to buy him back.

Despite just 27 FPL points in the last seven Gameweeks, Watkins continues to produce strong underlying numbers. Over the aforementioned period, only Solanke (25) has taken more shots amongst forwards than his 20.
