Expected FPL Points Review - A Look at the Stats

As the below image shows, O. Dango tops the Custom Stats xFPL table for Gameweek 23 with a score of 13.5. The Burkina Faso international took four shots in the box and was top for both 'big chances' (three) and shots on target (four).

Eze was joint-top for both attempted assists (five) and shots (five). However, none of these attempts were from inside the penalty area and none of his attempted assists were classified as 'big chances' created by Opta, which meant a low xFPL score of just 4.0.

Gakpo rewarded his investors with a 16-point FPL haul, the Dutch international scored from both his shots inside the penalty area and had his only attempted assist converted by Salah. He had three 'big chance' involvements (two 'big chances', one 'big chance created') and registered an xFPL score of 10.5.

Kluivert registered back to back double-digit FPL scores (22 and 13), the 25-year-old took three shots, none of which were classified as 'big chances' and created one 'big chance' en route to an xFPL score of 6.6

Salah had a relatively quiet game by his standards, the Egyptian international took only three shots in the box and created just one chance, notching an xFPL score of just 5.6.

What is xFPL?

xFPL is calculated primarily using expected goals (xG), assists (xA), which combine as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) involvements (xG + xA = xI), as well as expected clean sheets (xCS). These numbers are a result of underlying statistics (i.e. shot type and location will give a probability of scoring = xG). xFPL is the combination of these statistics and factors in appearance and bonus points to give an overall expected FPL point score.

Early FPL Transfer Activity Analysed - Which Players are FPL managers buying and selling?

The fourth-highest scoring midfielder with 121 FPL points, Kluivert, has also found himself transferred in by nearly 400,000 FPL managers.

With the injury to Calvert-Lewin, Ndiaye is a popular acquisition after his penalty against Brighton. Defensive Double Gameweek assets, Alexander-Arnold and Pickford, round off the top five transfers in.

The third-highest scoring FPL forward with 137 FPL points, Wood, is the most sold player so far with over 150,000 FPL managers parting ways with the New Zealand international. Raúl and João Pedro have seen nearly 200,000 sales combined, while it is surprising to see popular midfield assets Gordon and Palmer on their way out as well.

A look at the Top 10 Forward transfer combinations below, shows that Wood to Gakpo (16.1%) is the most popular transfer combination across all positions this Gameweek.

Top 10 forwards' FPL transfer combinations

All 10 of the top forward transfer combinations involve either Gakpo or Ndiaye in, with the Double Gameweek for Liverpool and Everton in mind. João Pedro, Raúl, Mateta, N. Jackson and Cunha are the other forwards being sold.

In the Top 10 Midfield transfer combinations, nine of the top 10 involve bringing in Kluivert with Gordon to Mbeumo the only exception. I. Sarr, Amad, Savinho and Enzo are some of the other midfielders making way.

The Top 10 Defender transfer combinations is similarly dominated by Double Gameweek assets with Mykolenko and Alexander-Arnold accounting for all 10. Robinson, Lewis, Hall, Colwill and Gabriel are the defenders being sold for the aforementioned duo.

Best Liverpool attacker bar Salah - Luis Díaz vs Gakpo

As shown in the image below from our Opta Player Heatmaps feature, Gakpo has scored over double the FPL points (43) as Luis Díaz (17) over the last six Gameweeks at an average of 7.2 FPL points per game. Both players have started all matches over that spell, but it is worth noting that the Dutchman has played 103 minutes more than the Colombian international.

Fantasy Premier League Points Comparison Diaz vs Gakpo

As the below image shows, Gakpo has the superior underlying number to go with his better output. The Dutch international has fared better for shots (13 vs 16), shots on target (four vs eight) and 'Expected Goals' (xG) (1.53 vs 3.21).

Luis Díaz vs Gakpo stats

When it comes to creativity, he has the edge over Luis Díaz as well. He has attempted more assists (six vs 13) and created more 'big chances' (zero vs three).

Based on this data, Gakpo appears to be head and shoulders over Luis Díaz as the second Liverpool attacker for FPL.
