Expected FPL Points Review - A Look at the Stats

As the below image shows, Wood tops the Custom Stats xFPL table for Gameweek 24 with a score of 12.3. No player landed more shots on target (four) or was afforded more 'big chances' than the 33-year-old.

Amad was the weekend’s most creative player, registering six attempted assists. However, none were classified as a ‘big chance’ by Opta, resulting in a low xFPL score of just 3.6.

Palmer led the way with seven shot attempts, but only two were inside the box, and none were considered ‘big chances’. He also created three chances and finished with an xFPL score of 6.2.

Raúl topped the charts for shots in the box with six. The Mexican international converted one of his ‘big chances’, earning an xFPL score of 6.9.

What is xFPL?

xFPL is calculated primarily using expected goals (xG), assists (xA), which combine as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) involvements (xG + xA = xI), as well as expected clean sheets (xCS). These numbers are a result of underlying statistics (i.e. shot type and location will give a probability of scoring = xG). xFPL is the combination of these statistics and factors in appearance and bonus points to give an overall expected FPL point score.

Early FPL Transfer Activity Analysed - Which Players are FPL managers buying and selling?

As shown in the image from our Transfer Analytics feature, Kluivert is currently the most popular transfer ahead of Gameweek 25. Over 250,000 FPL managers have brought him in so far, despite the Double Gameweek fixtures not yet being confirmed.

The top scoring forward in the game, Wood has been brought in by over 160,000 FPL managers while Kerkez, Mbeumo and Semenyo are also popular despite the lack of any returns over the weekend.

Newcastle players are on the chopping block with Gordon, Hall and Isak all amongst the top five players being sold. Amad and Watkins are also being sold in droves.

A look at the Top 10 Forward transfer combinations shows that bringing in Wissa, Wood, Havertz and Mateta is the priority this week for FPL managers, with João Pedro, Isak, Gakpo and Watkins making way.

As shown in the image below from the Top 10 Midfield transfer combinations, Gordon to Kluivert is by far the most popular combination (31%). Nine of the 10 combinations involve bringing in a Bournemouth midfielder with Gordon to Mbeumo the only exception.

The Top 10 Defender transfer combinations is also dominated by Bournemouth assets with Hall to Kerkez (16.2%) the most popular move.

Konaté and Muñoz are the only defenders to make the top 10 alongside Kerkez with Alexander-Arnold, Robinson, Colwill and Estupiñan departing.

Best Bournemouth midfielder - Kluivert vs Semenyo

As shown in the image below from our Opta Player Heatmaps feature, Kluivert (48) has outscored Semenyo (36) by 12 FPL points over the last six Gameweeks despite playing 133 fewer minutes.

Semenyo has started every game for the Cherries, except Gameweek 13 when he was suspended while Kluivert's minutes have been sporadic in the past.

Fantasy Premier League Points Comparison Kluivert vs Semenyo

As the stats below show, Kluivert has scored five goals compared to two for Semenyo despite the two players having similar 'Expected Goals' (xG) numbers (2.86 vs 2.80). In fact, Semenyo is significantly ahead for shots in the box (10 vs 16) and shots on target (seven vs 12) but the fact that the Dutchman has penalties in his locker makes a big difference.

Kluivert vs Semenyo FPL stats

Semenyo is ahead for creativity as well, both players have attempted the same number of assists (six) but the Ghanaian international has notched an 'Expected Assists' (xA) tally of 1.41 compared to just 0.60 for the Dutchman.

Based on this data, Semenyo might be the better pick despite spot-kick duties for Kluivert.
