FPL Gameweek 32 Review: Isak Leads the Captaincy Race as Triple Captain Chip Gains Traction

Double Gameweek 32 is well underway in Fantasy Premier League, with six matches already played on Saturday, April 12th. The biggest surprise so far? Aaron Ramsdale. The Southampton goalkeeper has stolen the spotlight with two penalty saves, earning an impressive 16 FPL points — the highest of the gameweek so far.

João Pedro, owned by just 8% of the top 1 million managers, is not far behind with 13 points, making him another early standout.

In this blog, we’ll break down the key Gameweek 32 stats — including captaincy trends, effective ownership, chip usage, and more.

Captaincy Trends – GW32

Alexander Isak emerged as the clear captaincy favourite for Gameweek 32, particularly among top-performing FPL managers. With a double gameweek against Manchester United and Crystal Palace, the Newcastle striker was heavily backed across all ranking tiers.

His strong form and favourable fixtures made him the go-to option, with many engaged managers opting to use their Triple Captain chip in a bid to capitalise on his potential haul.

Isak82.689.792.726.3
Salah12.67.54.731.1
Murphy1.71.11.31.2
Mateta0.70.90.71.2
Palmer0.30.20.04.3

The captaincy data highlights a clear divide between engaged and casual FPL managers. Among the top 10k, a massive 92.7% handed the armband to Alexander Isak, while just 26.3% of all managers did the same. This sharp contrast suggests a significant portion of the overall player base is no longer actively managing their teams. In fact, our data shows that 47% of total managers haven’t made a single team change in the last five gameweeks.

Mohamed Salah, facing West Ham United, remains a popular alternative, particularly among the overall player base where he leads captaincy with 31.1%. However, his selection decreases significantly among higher-ranked managers, with just 4.7% of the top 10k backing the Egyptian.

FPL DGW32 Effective Ownership Trends

The effective ownership (EO) numbers provide crucial insight into potential rank movements this gameweek:

PlayerTop 1M (EO%)Top 100k (EO%)Top 10k (EO%)Overall (EO%)
Isak197.5211.5219.388.6
Salah111.1106.6104.198.3
Marmoush73.281.284.226.3
Mateta70.280.284.619.8

Palmer30.232.30.043.7
Eze20.523.025.60.0
Sarr48.155.256.80.0

Isak's massive EO of 219.3% among the top 10k managers means non-owners or captainers could face significant rank drops if he performs well in his double gameweek. The high EO is driven by both widespread ownership and heavy captaincy and managers playing their Triple Captain chip.

Crystal Palace assets have drawn notable interest ahead of their Double Gameweek against Manchester City and Newcastle, with Jean-Philippe Mateta and Issa Sarr featuring prominently in teams managed by top FPL players. However, returns have been mixed.

Mateta managed just one point in the 5-2 defeat to City, after being subbed off at half-time. Palace boss Oliver Glasner explained the decision post-match: “He can do better than he did in the first half. He lost too many duels and too many balls. The mistake I made was to change the system, not to take Mateta off.”

On a more positive note, Sarr picked up an assist, and Eberechi Eze also found the net.

FPL DGW32 Chip Usage

ChipTop 1M (%)Top 100k (%)Top 10k (%)Overall (%)
Triple Captain19.323.227.63.8
Bench Boost6.57.67.71.8
Free Hit0.50.50.20.6
Wildcard5.73.93.02.3

The Triple Captain chip has seen significant deployment this week, particularly among top managers targeting Isak's double gameweek. The stark contrast between the 27.6% usage in the top 10k versus 3.8% overall suggests highly ranked managers are capitalising on this opportunity more aggressively.

Bench Boost usage is also notably higher among better-ranked managers, while Wildcard activation shows an interesting inverse correlation with rank.

FPL DGW32 Transfer Stats and Finances

Avg. GW Transfers0.80.70.60.6
Avg. Points Hit0.70.50.30.7
Avg. Team Value101.9102.7103.299.2
Avg. Bank Balance2.01.81.81.5

The financial metrics reveal that top managers have built significantly higher team values, with the top 10k averaging £103.2m compared to the overall average of £99.2m. This additional value has likely contributed to their ability to field stronger teams throughout the season.

Top managers are also showing more restraint with transfers and hits this week, with the top 10k averaging just 0.3 points in hits compared to 0.7 for both the top 1M and overall managers. This conservative approach suggests they're comfortable with their team structure heading into this crucial gameweek.

The data clearly shows how top-performing FPL managers are approaching Double Gameweek 32 — with strong investment in Newcastle and Crystal Palace players, despite challenging fixtures. Even after Palace’s 5-2 loss to Manchester City and Mateta’s disappointing one-point return, assets like Eze and Sarr still provided attacking returns. These high-level managers continue to back calculated picks while maintaining the disciplined chip and transfer strategies that have brought them consistent success throughout the season.
