FPL Gameweek 7: Saka & Maddison Replacements Compared

Fantasy Football Fix 27 Sept. 2023

Popular Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfielders Saka and Maddison are both currently doubtful for Gameweek 7 and in this blog, the numbers of some alternative options are analysed using the Fix Comparison Matrix.

Pedro Neto (MCI)

Neto has a difficult fixture against Man. City in Gameweek 7 but his numbers over the first six gameweeks have been excellent, the 23-year-old has racked up 34 FPL points with one goal and four assists with no player in the comparison managing more than his 18 attempted assists. He is also taking plenty of shots (11) and Wolves look a much more attacking outfit than last season. His price of just £5.6m also enables upgrades elsewhere.

Moussa Diaby (BHA)

Diaby has been playing as a support striker alongside Watkins in recent weeks and Villa's new signing has already racked up two goals and two assists in six matches. He is second for shots (13) only to Bowen (16) and is joint-second for shots on target (SoT) (six). His 10 attempted and four 'big chances' (BC) created indicate that he has many routes to points as well. As the below image from our Fixture Analyser shows, Villa have an excellent run of fixtures over the next six Gameweeks and though the Brighton game might prove to be a difficult test, he is worth owning for the brilliant run of games after.

Jarrod Bowen (SHU)

Bowen's 39 FPL points sees him trail only Salah (43), Saka and Son (44) amongst midfielders and no player has scored more goals than his four in the comparison. He is top for shots (16), SoT (eight) and BC (five) which indicates that these returns are indeed sustainable. As the below image from our Stats Sandbox feature shows, he is ranked fifth for shots in the box (SiB) (12) amongst midfielders. However, with the signing of Ward-Prowse he has given up all set-piece duties and has only attempted four assists in six matches. The entry point for Bowen is great in Gameweek 7 with the Hammers facing a Sheff. Utd. side that has just shipped eight goals in their last match but the next two fixtures for the Hammers are difficult against Newcastle and Villa.

James Ward-Prowse (SHU)

Ward-Prowse has played the fewest minutes (441) in the comparison with the midfielder only making his first appearance for West Ham in Gameweek 2. Despite that, he has racked up 31 FPL points with two goals and five assists, his FPL BPS of 136 is better than Bowen (118) which would indicate that a single return would be enough for him to pick up Bonus Points. He is playing a much more attacking role for the Hammers than he did for Southampton but his shot volume is still on the lower side with just six shots and four SoT. He has still had five BC involvements (two BC, three BC created) which is just one fewer than Bowen (five BC, one BC created) and the £0.8m saved could go a long way.

Anthony Gordon (BUR)

The injury to H. Barnes should see Gordon get more consistent gametime with the 22-year old featuring for just 454 minutes thus far. He has delivered when on the pitch with two goals and three assists while his underlying numbers have been decent as well. He is third for shots (12), second for SoT (six) and third for attempted assists (eight). He has had more BC involvements (two BC, five BC created) than any other player in the comparison and his price of £5.6m is a significant saving. However, it is worth mentioning that he is currently on four yellow cards and another booking would see him banned for one match.
