The below image from our Fix Comparison Matrix shows the underlying numbers for the Premium Midfield options in Fantasy Premier League 2024/25. De Bruyne is not included with his fitness doubts. Averages per game are used since some players have missed games due to injury.
Mohamed Salah
Salah has been a mainstay in Liverpool's starting lineup, despite rotation in the other two positions in the front three. The Egyptian international ranks second for FPL points (8.9) and goals (0.6). Although his shot volume (3.1) is only the third highest, he leads in shots on target (2.1). His involvement in 'big chances' is strong as well, with 1.1 'big chances' and 0.6 'big chances' created per game.
Cole Palmer
The joint-top scoring FPL asset with 67 points, Palmer has been subbed off early only twice by Maresca. He tops the comparison for FPL points (9.6) and goals (0.9). His underlying numbers are excellent too: second for shots (3.4), shots on target (1.6), and attempted assists (3.3). Unlike other premium assets who are skewed towards either 'big chances' or 'big chances' created, he offers a balance of both with 0.9 and 1.0 per game, respectively.
Bukayo Saka
Saka has failed to deliver attacking returns in only one game this season, but he has only hit double digits twice. Despite leading in shots (3.6), he ranks third for 'Expected Goals' (0.3) per game, indicating these chances are not of high quality. However, he is by far the most creative premium midfielder, with no one attempting more assists (3.9) or creating more 'big chances' per game (1.9).
Phil Foden
Foden's data is limited due to fitness issues, and in his limited minutes, he has averaged just 1.3 shots and 1.3 attempted assists per game, with no involvement in 'big chances' over that period. However, as shown in our Fixture Difficulty Ratings feature, Man City have an excellent schedule over the next four gameweeks, with their next two games against Wolves and Southampton, who have conceded 21 and 15 goals, respectively.
Heung-Min Son
Son has missed Spurs' last two fixtures due to an injury sustained in the Europa League, but the South Korean international is expected to return after the international break. He averaged a solid 6.6 FPL points when he started, but his underlying numbers suggest he poses more of an assist threat than a goal threat. The 32-year-old averages only 1.4 shots per game but creates 2.8 chances and ranks third for 'big chances' created.
As the above image from our Opta Stats Sandbox feature shows, there are a total of nine midfielders in the aforementioned price bracket with Luis Diaz top for 'Expected FPL points' (xFPL) (47.38) and FPL points (54).
Mbeumo (six) has scored the most goals amongst the mid-priced midfielders and is also top for shots on target (nine). B. Fernandes has attempted the most shots (18) but has landed just one on target and is sixth for xG (1.96).
Diogo J. and Luis Diaz are top for shots in the box (13 each) and 'big chances' (seven) with Mbeumo (16), Maddison and Bowen (15 each) close behind. However, Maddison (three) and Bowen (two) are significantly behind for 'big chances' with Martinelli and Gordon (four) faring better.
Based on this data, if goal-scoring midfielders are the priority, the Liverpool duo, Mbeumo and Maddison look to be the best options.
Bowen has been the most creative of the aforementioned mid-priced midfielders with 19 attempted assists and is also top for 'Expected Assists' (xA) (2.23). Gordon is second for attempted assists (15) but just fourth for xA (1.23) as he has created just one 'big chance'.
Mbeumo tops the table for 'big chances' created (five) and is second for xA (2.23). Martinelli, Maddison and Bowen have all created three 'big chances' each with the Spurs midfielder third for xA (1.89). B. Fernandes' creativity numbers are much lower than usual with the Portuguese international attempting just six assists in 571 minutes.
Diogo J. looks to be relying purely on goals for his FPL returns with just three attempted assists. However, he has racked up two FPL assists with his two 'big chances' created. Luis Diaz is the more creative of the duo with 10 attempted assists and 1.15 xA.
The comparison highlights Mbeumo and Maddison as two of the top picks in this bracket with a mix of both goal and assist potential. Unlike the Liverpool midfielders, there is no gametime risk associated with either Maddison and Mbeumo either.
As the Opta Stats Sandbox image above shows, Adama is top amongst the budget midfielders for xFPL (42.45) but is only 10th for FPL points (28). The pacy winger is top for xG (3.24) and fifth for xA (1.97) but has notched only one goal and two assists so far.
Eze and Madueke are top for shots on target (nine) with the Palace man ahead for xG (3.08 vs 2.32). No midfielder in this bracket has attempted more shots than Semenyo (31) with only Eze (3.08) and Adama (3.24) registering a higher xG tally than his 3.04.
Johnson is the form player in this price bracket with three goals and an assist in his last three appearances, the Welsh international is top for shots in the box (21) and second only to Adama (seven) for 'big chances' (five).
Popular budget option Rogers is only 11th for xFPL (32.91), although his xA numbers are healthy (2.25) (fourth), he is only 19th for xG (1.47).
Andreas (23) and McNeil (22) are the most creative players with no midfielder in this bracket creating more 'big chances' than McNeil (five). Smith-Rowe has perhaps overperformed his underlying numbers, the former Arsenal man has scored with both his attempts on target and has notched one assist from just six chances created.
Based on this analysis, Johnson looks like the best pick with McNeil and Madueke also worthy of consideration.
