In the upside-down world of FPL, James Cooper, who boasts 7 x Top 10k finishes, and finished top amongst all the Elite XI managers last season, is currently enduring one of his worst ever seasons. Following a great Gameweek 21 score, James has broken into the Top 1m for the first time this campaign. This is a significant improvement from his Gameweek 7 rank of 4.6m, but still miles from where he would usually be at this stage of the season.
James was sensible enough to roll a free transfer from Gameweek 20, enabling him to perform minor surgery ahead of Gameweek 21 and sort out international cup absentees. Phil Foden (£8.0m) and Bukayo Saka (£9.1m) came in to replace the missing midfielders. Sadly neither player provided the satisfaction of instant returns. However, both of James’ new recruits set up the team for the future, and should provide FPL points going forward.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) injured and Jamaal Lascelles (£4.1m) no longer first choice, James decided to take a hit to bring in Brighton’s Pervis Estupiñán (£5.1m) – another forward-thinking transfer given Brighton’s amazing fixtures – which instantly paid dividends as the Ecuadorian full-back returned 8 points against Wolves.

James also joined the 27.5% of the Top 100k who put the armband on Cole Palmer (£5.8m) and avoided the disappointment of Saka – captained by 42.5% according to Live Insight – and his lowly 3 points.
But for James, this Gameweek was all about the ‘what could have been’:
I ought to be happy this week, with Gabriel hauling, finally some actual clean sheets, and a captain return. But having been scared off Jota as a rotation risk with Diaz, and missing out on a Darwin haul after holding him for so long, it has left a sour taste in the mouth.
Looking ahead, there is only one question on James’ mind. When will Erling Haaland (£13.9m) return? This singular piece of information will have an impact on the shape of James’ squad going forward. In either scenario, James is focused on Manchester City’s upcoming fixtures and will future proof his team accordingly.
If the news is that he’s [Haaland] back, then he comes in for Isak with my free transfer - easy. If not - at this stage I’m inclined to use my free transfer on Udogie to Walker, for that immediate Burnley fixture. That’s with an eye on [Gameweeks] 25 and 26. I’m currently not minded to Free Hit in 25, as I think it’s navigable with transfers alone, and I think the chip can be deployed to greater effect later (maybe blank Gameweek 29, maybe double Gameweek 34). As such, getting on City players who double in 25, and don’t blank in 26, makes sense.
As if us FPL managers didn’t have enough to think about, the return of premium midfielder Kevin De Bruyne (£10.5m) throws another spanner into the works. An impressive return from injury saw the midfield maestro bag a goal and an assist in just 21 minutes; a match winning performance from City’s talismanic Belgian. Torn between potential explosive returns and concern about minutes, managers are wondering how to allocate their funds appropriately. For James, De Bruyne could be a stretch too far.
I’d love KDB but can’t make the finances work, particularly given I already have Trent. I’ll have to hide behind the sofa and hope his minutes remain limited for the time being. (If Salah isn’t back by the start of 25 then this may change!)
A similar dilemma is posed by Ivan Toney (£8.0m) who, like De Bruyne, marked his lengthy absence with a return from a direct free kick – albeit with help of some crafty ball placement, which stretched the rules of the game to their limits. While easier on the budget, James has other doubts about bringing the Brentford forward in.
You may say that Toney also doubles in 25 and doesn’t blank in 26. My issue there is first that his fixtures are dire (City and Liverpool in 25 is nothing to get worked up about), and secondly that I’m really happy with my strikers - both Watkins and Solanke have great season-long numbers and good fixtures to come.
