Former Elite XI Manager’s League winner James Cooper has had a slow start to the season. After a decent opening Gameweek, James was punished by Gameweek 2 in which his seven attacking players all blanked, while Kaoru Mitoma (£6.6m) taunted him from the bench with his 12-pointer.
In Gameweek 3, James’ Manchester United midfield double up finally paid dividends, as did his continued faith in Nicholas Jackson (£7.1m) who returned against Luton. These factors contributed to a huge rank rise, although James, who is used to living life in the upper echelons of the Overall league, will be wanting more from his squad.
James has only made a single transfer so far this season. Kai Havertz (£7.4m) made way for Bryan Mbeumo (£6.7m), who was transferred in by over 1.2 million players (Transfer Analytics) but sadly – and in true FPL fashion – blanked for his owners after a double-digit return in Gameweek 2.
James now heads into Gameweek 4 with two free transfers at his disposal and a multitude of factors to consider. He starts with a review of his defence.
I picked the team with a potential horizon of a Wildcard around Gameweek 8. Not locked in if it’s not necessary, but that was the thinking. Flekken has a good run until then. Happy with the value he provides (exemplified by getting 4 points in a game in which he conceded this weekend). Chilwell needs no comment. Essential. Estupinan’s fixtures turn poor now, but he’s playing so advanced that I don’t mind. Colwill is fine but blocks a third Chelsea, which is irritating. Saliba’s fixtures also get a bit iffy now - no good home games for a while, but I rate Arsenal’s defence highly.
But it is on the attack that James will most likely focus his efforts. A conundrum for James will be what to do with his Brighton triple-up as they head into a difficult patch of fixtures. West Ham showed that Brighton are not invulnerable; for all their possession and passing, West Ham dominated, racking up 3.21 xG to Brighton’s 1.45 (Match Stats). Managers will no doubt be taking note of Moyes’ tactics and looking to emulate their ability to nullify Brighton’s attacking threat. According to the Fixture Planner, Brighton are bottom of the table for both attack and defence for the next six Gameweeks.
You would expect that first on the list for James could be João Pedro (£5.5m) who has now scored 1 point across two 30-minute cameos, with De Zerbi publicly stating that Pedro is not mentally where he needs him to be. But James believes there is more value to be had by bringing in better midfield assets.
Pedro being benched is not ideal, but I have the depth to bench him, so that doesn’t feel urgent. In midfield, Saka is ok to tick away there; Bruno has some of the best underlyings in the league, he’s going nowhere; Mbeumo has good fixtures and was only added last week, he’s fine; Rashford I am a bit unsure about, but I don’t feel it’s urgent to shift him. He has underwhelmed so far, but he’s still an explosive asset with long term good numbers. May keep him, may not; Mitoma has the unkind fixture swing as of now, so he’s on the chopping block.
