Just inside the top 1m after four Gameweeks, Craig is reasonably content with his start to the campaign. Reflecting on the season so far, Craig feels that he has not made any serious mistakes. He was the wrong side of the 50/50 decision between Bryan Mbeumo (£6.8m) and Kaoru Mitoma (£6.5m) but the difference between the two players is only 10 points, hardly a season-defining decision.
Sat around the 1m rank, I’m happy enough with how the season is going so far. Rashford was my biggest question mark before the season start, and having moved him out for Foden in Gameweek 4, I’m hoping my gut instincts pay off. United have unquestionably enticing fixtures from Gameweek 6, but too many small things seem to be going awry there right now, and negative backdrops to a club’s fortunes always make me nervous about doubling or tripling up.
At the beginning of the season, Craig was eyeing up a Wildcard during the international break wedged between Gameweeks 8 and 9. With plenty of data to use as a foundation and significant fixture swings – not to mention, a safety net for player injuries sustained on international duty – this looks like a good place to Wildcard – check out our Wildcard Strategy article here.
With that [Wildcard in GW9] in mind, my transfers from here are in the knowledge that I almost certainly have a clean slate in [Gameweek] 9, and need only to cover Gameweeks 5 to 8. Similarly, I had Trippier near-nailed as coming in Gameweek 5, to the extent that I left plenty in the bank from Gameweek 1 to accommodate the moves without surgery. As Gameweek 5 approaches, however, I don’t feel quite so certain about this move (at least this week).
The Opta Stats Sandbox shows that Brentford are ranked 4th best for Expected Goals Conceded (xGC). Add to this that the attacking threat of Kieran Trippier (£6.5m) has been a little muted of late and this has been sufficient to send Craig’s transfer plans in a different direction.
With Son Heung-min (£9.1m) having been so effective as a #9 against Burnley, a transfer in for the South Korean star has cemented its way into Craig’s thinking. While Gameweeks 6 and 7 pose a challenge to Son’s prospects, two fixtures against newly promoted sides in Gameweeks 5 and 8, are difficult to resist.
When asked about Luton and Burnley’s double in Gameweek 7, Craig responded that he has no interest in assets from either of those teams. His exact response will not be quoted in the interests of protecting the eyes of our younger audience!
With that considered, I am left with the following plan pencilled in: GW5: Mitoma to Son, GW6: Dependent upon Gvardiol (if he’s not looking nailed) then Fabian Schär comes in, GW7: Maddison to Bowen, GW8: A final one-week punt before the Wildcard, like March, Sterling, or even Maddison (again).
