The Consensus XI is an aggregated FPL squad, based on the most highly-owned players amongst the Elite XI: Team Reveal managers. As it represents the combined wisdom of the very best managers, there is an argument to say that this is the best FPL squad you could start the season with.
Let’s take a closer look:
Between the sticks is Dean Henderson (£4.5m) who is currently owned by 78.6% of our Elite XI managers.
According to Opta Stats Sandbox, Crystal Palace were the 5th best defensive side last season in terms of Expected Goals Conceded (55.64) and Total Shots Conceded (463). He is also expected to be first choice under Glasner, who improved Crystal Palace at both ends of the pitch last season.
Backup keeper is Hákon Valdimarsson (£4.0m) who is not expected to be first choice for Brentford and therefore must be viewed as a ‘burner’ option, of which there are many. His current ownership is just 4.0%, limiting the risk of an early price fall.
Just over half of the Elite XI managers have decided to stretch to premium defender Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) as a mainstay in their defence. Alexander-Arnold has the dual benefit of good opening fixtures and potent attacking threat.
According to Opta Player Heatmaps, Alexander-Arnold is second amongst all players for Big Chances Created per 90 minutes in 2023/24. If pre-season is any measure to go by, Arne Slot will employ the English defender in the tried-and-tested right-back role, which should provide stability from an FPL returns perspective.
As can be seen from the below heatmap, the experimentation with Trent's hybrid midfield role lead to him often cutting inside deep in his own half. Judging by his FPL returns last season, is was a less effective use of the England international.
Joining him is Joško Gvardiol (£6.0m) who, according to Live Insight, is owned by 33.6% of all FPL managers. Gvardiol was an FPL points machine in the latter half of last season. This was largely driven by him being employed as a winger due to an unexpected tactical change from Pep Guardiola. Should Gvardiol continue to be more advanced this season, he could bag some serious returns.
In midfield, our Elite XI managers cannot seem to resist what is widely regarded as a major pricing error. Christopher Nkunku (£6.5m) could be a key player in a new-look Chelsea side under Maresca. Sidelined through injury for most of last season, the French midfielder looks set to be a key component in the Chelsea attack. He currently makes the starting XI of 35% of Elite Managers’ squads.
Joining him is Eberechi Eze (£7.0m), also viewed as a rare bargain under this season’s pricing scheme. With Olise having departed Palace, Eze is likely to be the talisman of his team and the expectations of him will be high.
According to Predicted Points & Stats, Eze is set to score 21.7 points over the opening five Gameweeks. This ranks him as the sixth best player in terms of predicted points, meaning he is directly competing with more expensive assets such as Cole Palmer (£10.5m) and Bukayo Saka (£10.0m).
Every single Elite XI manager owns both Erling Haaland (£15.0m) and Alexander Isak (£8.5m). This is a testament to two things. Firstly, Haaland is such a potent source of points, even a record-breaking starting price is not enough to put our Elite XI managers off. Second, Isak joins Nkunku as a clearly underpriced asset.
A quick look at the Fix Comparison Matrix tool highlights why these two forwards are owned by 100% of our Elite XI managers. Haaland racks up over 0.9 goals per game last season. Isak is close with 0.7.
Haaland earns 1.9 shots on target per game, whereas Isak gets 1.4. Both forwards will avail of the changes to the BPS scoring, which now reward players for shots on target. Both strikers are more oriented around goal threat. However, there is also some good news with creative underlying statistics too. Both Haaland and Isak are tied on 0.15 expected assists per game and attempt roughly one assist per game.
