Selecting the correct captain can make the difference between a great and terrible Gameweek. It is one of the most important decisions that Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers need to get right each week. This blog reviews who the most successful managers picked as captains and how crucial these decisions were to their overall success.
The data shows that Haaland was the most popular captain choice across all three groups. Salah was the second-most captained, with 26.4% of the ‘Top 50’ and 23.5% of the ‘All Time Top 50’ managers choosing him. These two players accounted for over 75% of the captaincy choices among both groups. This implies that the most successful managers favoured captaining premium assets, especially those who take penalties.
Interestingly, J. Alvarez comes out on top for the ‘Top 50’ with an average of 9.29 points per Gameweek and for the ‘All Time Top 50’ with an average of 9.07 points. However, this was likely only for a Gameweek or two when Haaland was absent due to injury. For example, the Argentinian scored 7 points in Gameweek 20 against Sheffield United (H) and 13 points against Burnley (H) in Gameweek 22, which were likely the Gameweeks in question.
Palmer was second for the ‘Top 50’ with an average of 8.62 points, and he was captained in 4.4% of the Gameweeks. For the ‘All Time Top 50,’ Haaland was second with an average of 7.88 points, justifying his captaincy popularity and beating Palmer by 0.18 average points.
The data indicates that the ‘Top 50’s’ captaincy selection was either the most popular or second most popular choice the majority of the time. This suggests they did not pursue differential choices and were content with going with the most popular option. Presumably, this was because they believed the popular choice would score the most points. Therefore, consistently choosing the most popular captain each Gameweek is likely to pay dividends.
By understanding the captaincy choices of top Fantasy Premier League managers, you can optimise your own captain selections and improve your chances of success in the FPL. Keep these insights in mind as you plan your captain picks each Gameweek.
