In this blog, we examine the squads of the top Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to understand their rotation strategies and frequency. Our goal is to determine the optimal rotation strategies for achieving a high overall rank.
Top Fantasy Premier League managers, including the ‘Top 50’ and the ‘All Time Top 50’ groups, actively rotate goalkeepers more frequently than the ‘All FPL’ group. These top managers often employ a home and away rotation strategy with two budget goalkeepers. Teams at the lower end of the Premier League table typically perform better defensively at home, making this an effective strategy. Early in the season, popular budget goalkeepers included Turner from Nottingham Forest and Areola from West Ham, both priced at £4.0M. Later in the season, Dubravka from Newcastle became a viable budget option when Pope was injured.
A similar trend is evident in the rotation of defenders, midfielders, and forwards, with the ‘Top 50’ and ‘All Time Top 50’ groups favouring more active rotation than the ‘All FPL’ group. The most successful managers rotate their defenders more frequently than their midfielders and forwards. The home/away rotation approach used for goalkeepers is also effective for budget defenders. With FPL player prices being cheaper than in previous seasons, player rotation is becoming more prevalent.
The 2023/24 season saw managers like Guardiola, Klopp, and De Zerbi rotate their players regularly, along with blank Gameweeks occurring due to FA Cup games. Additionally, when preparing to use the Bench Boost chip, top managers aim to have 15 playing players in their squad. Therefore, Fantasy Premier League is increasingly becoming a squad game, and managers cannot afford to have non-playing fodder on the bench.
By understanding and implementing these rotation strategies, you can optimise your Fantasy Premier League team for a higher overall ranking. Keep these insights in mind as you plan your transfers and squad selection throughout the season.
