Tim’s FPL Wildcard Team Selection Strategy

Tim emphasises a strategic approach to his Wildcard selection, stating, “My current squad is likely to be largely reflective of what I end up going with come the Gameweek 6 deadline. I'm really looking to minimise rotation as much as possible and perhaps build up a few free transfers to swap players in and out as fixtures and form dictate.”

FPL Defenders: Alexander-Arnold Not a 'Must-Have'

When discussing his defensive choices, Tim said, “With Tottenham’s favourable run of fixtures ahead, I’m leaning towards Pedro Porro (£5.6m), although I might also consider Gvardiol (£6.0m), Romero (£5.1m), or even Lewis (£4.7m). Nottingham Forest has shown defensive solidity, making their £4.5m players worth a look. I had Konsa (£4.5m)in my first draft, and he remains a solid option.”

FPL defender comparison

Analysing the five defenders Tim highlighted in the Fix Comparison Matrix tool, Romero leads in FPL points, expected FPL points, and bonus points this season. However, Gvardiol is projected to score the most points (16.3) over the next five games.

He continued, “For my third bench spot, I prefer a low-cost £4.0m defender like Greaves, who I don’t expect to call upon often. The absence of Ødegaard makes an Arsenal defensive double-up more appealing right now, although I still think Havertz could offer some value with upcoming favourable fixtures. I'm also contemplating moving on from Trent Alexander-Arnold, as Liverpool’s fixtures are getting less favorable, which might free up some funds for better investments.”

FPL team fixture difficulty rating

As Tim pointed out and the Fixture Planner tool confirms, Liverpool face some tough fixtures ahead, particularly in Gameweek 9 against Arsenal.

Wildcard Midfielders: No Better Value Than Eze

Regarding midfielders, Tim stated, “I still see no better value than Eze (£6.9m) or Mbeumo (£7.2m), even without Wissa. I’ve been eager to include Semenyo (£5.6m) especially with Southampton and Leicester coming up, which makes him a reliable selection. I’ve structured my squad so that he can be benched during difficult fixtures in Gameweeks 8, 9, and 10 because it’s tough to have all your players with good matchups every week.”

Mbeumo and Eze FPL stats for 2024/25

Interestingly, when comparing Mbeumo and Eze in the Opta Player Heatmaps tool, Mbeumo has been significantly overperforming his expected goals while underperforming his expected assists. Meanwhile, the Palace talisman has been underperforming in both metrics.

FPL Forwards: Budget Options & The Norwegian

On the forward front, Tim remarked, “Calvert-Lewin (£6.0m) could either stay in my squad or be swapped for João Pedro (£5.6m), especially now that his price has dropped. However, I’ve heard rumours that the Brighton forward might be dealing with another injury, which makes me reconsider my options. I’m seriously thinking about bringing Wood (£6.1m) into my third forward slot. He seems more nailed on than I initially thought and has favourable fixtures. Additionally, I’m looking at Solanke (£7.5m), who hopefully will capitalise on the chances Spurs create. I’ve even been tempted to go for Watkins (£9.0m) and potentially swap him for Solanke later.”

Fantasy Premier League forwards' projected points

Using the Predicted Points & Stats tool, filtered by forwards for the next three gameweeks, Watkins tops the list of Tim's mentioned forwards with 15.1 points. Interestingly, Solanke (11.6) ranks at the bottom, though he's only slightly behind Calvert-Lewin.

Wildcard Conclusion

Tim Walpole's Gameweek 6 Wildcard strategy reflects a keen understanding of fixture dynamics and player form, making his insights invaluable for Fantasy Premier League managers.
