Amongst our Elite XI managers, Andrew Neave was one of the earliest to play his Wildcard (in Gameweek 5). A rank rise of 2.6m to 1.1m declares the Wildcard a success, but the rank rise has been slow and patchy for Andrew, and our Elite XI manager is concerned that his decision-making is being affected by his uncharacteristically poor start.
The [international] break has probably come at the right time for me. I've made far too many moves this season when I should have just sat tight. Patience is something successful managers waffle on about all the time. But time seems to move a lot slower the further down the ranks you are. We're always keen to rectify the wrongs as soon as we can, so it's easy to feel like changes need to be made quickly when things aren't going according to plan. In just 12 Gameweeks I've bought, sold, and then re-bought 3 players! What a waste. Perhaps it's time to completely forget about my rank, and ask myself whether I'd be making certain transfers if I was sitting in the top 100k.
Case in point for Gameweek 13 is Son Heung-min (£9.7m), a player who is currently making Andrew feel twitchy. With James Maddison (£7.9m) unavailable due to his ankle injury, Son’s attacking output has inevitably reduced. According to the Opta Player Heatmaps tool, Son’s underlying stats drop from 0.49 xG per 90 to 0.17 xG per 90 when Maddison is not on the pitch.
My immediate thought when looking ahead to Gameweek 13 was to consider getting rid of the Spurs front man to help fund moves for Bowen, Nunez and Mbeumo in the next few weeks. We've only got a tiny sample size to work with, but Son's underlying data is unsurprisingly poor without the creativity of Maddison. But would I be moving him on if I was sitting in the top 100k? Absolutely not. He's probably the most clinical finisher in the league and playing OOP [Out Of Position] for a manager who loves to attack.
With 26 Gameweeks and just 50 points between Andrew and the Top 100k, all that is required is a gain of 2 points per Gameweek for him to get to where he wants to be. While progress may seem frustratingly slow, 3 points gained (on the average) each week would see our Elite XI manager just outside the top 10k by the end of the season.
A major target for Andrew is Bryan Mbeumo (£6.8m), as Brentford embark on a fantastic run of fixtures starting in Gameweek 14. An unwelcome spanner in the works is the injury to Kaoru Mitoma (£6.6m) which may force Andrew’s hand at a time when he was hoping to keep a free transfer up his sleeve.
News of Mitoma's injury is really frustrating. I'm £0.1m off moving him to Mbeumo, something I had planned for Gameweek 14 after freeing up some funds. Gameweek 15 may see me moving off Diaby as he starts a slightly tougher run of fixtures, and it'll likely be the Chelsea midfielders vying for a spot. So, it's quite likely I will be calling on Archer who sits first on my bench. With more internationals still to be played this week, my hand may be forced, but if I can just grit my teeth and bare it for one more week, having two free transfers going into Gameweek 14 may just be the best play.
