For many of us, this season has felt like one disaster after another; our Elite XI manager, Corey Baker, can relate. After a promising start, Corey endured a severe rank drop and has been grappling to get back up the ranks ever since.

A successful Gameweek 10 Wildcard and returns from Cole Palmer (£5.0m) in Gameweek 11 have played a big role in the beginning of this transformation – as has avoiding Tottenham defenders!

This season has been quite a slog for me. What started out well, went badly awry with an ill-fated hit in Gameweek 5. Since then, I have been struggling to regain my footing. My decision to wait on my Wildcard went terribly, and I found myself stuck at 1.5 million after Gameweek 8.

Gameweek 12 and beyond

To say that Corey likes to forward plan is a huge understatement. Our Elite XI manager has provisional moves pencilled in as far as Gameweek 20, with Blank Gameweek 18 and the African Cup of Nations factored into his thinking. This planning strongly influenced Corey’s Wildcard and set the structure for the Gameweeks still to come.

Using the Fixture Planner, Corey has assessed the schedule and put together a plan for his moves. In the immediate future, Corey will be looking to bolster his defence, while eyeing up a midfield switch in Gameweek 14.

I plan on swapping Bowen for Mbeumo in two weeks’ time, and then will shore up my defense with a series of improvements. I am focusing my defensive improvements on Newcastle and Chelsea, looking to take advantage of their fixture swings. As part of that I will need to find massive funds as I am looking to get Trippier in starting in Gameweek 17. This will require moving Salah.

“Moving Salah”!?

Over 44% of all FPL managers own Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) and this figure rockets up to 80.8% when you filter it to managers in the Top 100k using the Live Insight tool. With 12 goal involvements in 11 Gameweeks, it is probably not on the minds of many to move the Egyptian King along. But Corey has recognised a period in the schedule when life might be tougher for Salah. Between Gameweeks 17-20, Liverpool endures a tough run of fixtures and then will lose their star winger to the African Cup of Nations for a time. This period coincides with some other fixture swings.

During that same run, Newcastle have Fulham, Luton and Nottingham Forrest, so there could be massive points available [for Trippier]. I am also able to justify the Salah move by bringing in Maddison as a replacement to allow me to double up with Spurs attack for Forrest, Everton, Brighton and Bournemouth.

Blank Gameweek 18

Another benefit to Corey’s future planning will be the ability to navigate Blank Gameweek 18. Managers who approach Gameweek 18 loaded up with Manchester City and Brentford players may feel the need to play their Free Hit chip in order to survive the Gameweek. With careful planning, Corey intends to avoid this.

I should be able to manage the Blank Gameweek 18 with this roster, having just Haaland and Mbeumo to bench, and fairly solid fixtures elsewhere. Following 18, I will be looking to bring in Alvarez and maybe Kyle Walker for the potential double in Gameweek 20. Then I would look to move on from Mbeumo, who will also be heading to the African Cup of Nations after Gameweek 20.
