Gameweek 10 Review

Mark Mansfield is one of the few FPL managers who chose Gameweek 10 to play his first Wildcard. With a respectable Gameweek score of 76, he currently sits just outside the Top 10k which, for a manager of his calibre, will undoubtedly be his minimum target this season.

Mark’s initial plan was to wait until Gameweek 13 to play his Wildcard. When asked why his plan changed, he said:

Having been reasonably committed to Wildcarding going into Gameweek 13, a succession of events led me to cast that plan aside. Keeping Mo Salah until Gameweek 12 [to captain him] was very much the plan, but that increasingly came into question based on performances. Williams and Bailey were also central to that idea, but the subbing of the former, and abject performances of the latter, were cause for concern. Then by Friday it was 100% clear to me [that I needed to Wildcard] based on circumstances that Mitrovic was out. I was destined to have poor scores in Gameweeks 10 and 12 and a potentially poor Gameweek 11.

One of the most difficult aspects of FPL is recognising when to abandon an established plan. The Elite XI managers are adept at critically evaluating their circumstances and being adaptable to new information when circumstances change.

It came to the point where delaying Wildcard until Gameweek 12 was cutting off my nose to spite my face. I would be sacrificing the next 3 Gameweeks for the sake of the final 4, and doing that could diminish my bright start to the season. It’s not nice to deviate from a plan you are committed to, but it felt like the right decision. There was risk in selling Jesus, and Salah in particular, but there was no severe punishment this week. I landed on a structure with one premium and a strong front 8 to compensate for Mitrovic’s absence. Maybe this will be the prevailing structure until the World Cup.

With a back three of João Cancelo (£7.3m), Reece James (£6.1m) and Kieran Trippier (£5.6m) – as well as Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.4m) between the sticks – Mark’s defensive assets earned him a combined 32 points, over half of which were from Cancelo’s huge haul. A frustrating day for owners of James, who had to endure a 1-pointer, following his omission from the starting lineup due to a dead leg. This is a shame, as James is ranked 2nd highest for Expected Assists (1.51) amongst defenders (as can been seen from the Opta Player Heatmaps tool) and could have returned in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Wolves.
