Gameweek 15 Review

80 points in Gameweek 15 was enough to see Matt Corbidge, jump into first place in the Elite XI Manager league table and secure a spot tantalisingly close to the Top 10k. A fantastic position to be in as we approach the big Premier League break.

Despite a late clean sheet loss for Nick Pope (£5.3m) and a red card for João Cancelo (£7.4m), Matt will still be pleased with his defensive performance, bagging 24 points between Kieran Trippier (£5.9m), James Justin (£4.3m) and Ben White (£4.6m), the latter being subbed on for Aleksandar Mitrović (£6.9m) who did not make the squad due to injury, disappointing the 33.3% of managers in the Top 100k who owned him (Insight Live).

Joao Cancelo

Cancelo will serve his 1-match suspension in the EFL Cup and hence is available for Gameweek 16

It was midfield where the real points were generated for Matt in Gameweek 15. His continued faith in Wilfried Zaha (£7.5m) was repaid with a double-digit haul. Zaha, who faces Nottingham Forest in Gameweek 16, was one of the most highly sold players ahead of Gameweek 15, according to Transfer Analytics.

In addition, Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) is owned by just 25% of managers in the Top 100k, he will have frustrated his sellers with a scintillating performance against Tottenham, scoring two excellent goals in the process and claiming all three bonus points. A curious choice was for Matt to play Leon Bailey (£4.5m) over Matt Doherty (£4.6m) and Andreas Pereira (£4.6m), but this decision paid off with Bailey getting on the score sheet and bagging a bonus point for his troubles.

Up front, the killer duo of Harry Kane (£11.6m) and Erling Haaland (£12.1m) once again rewarded Matt, combining to produce two returns apiece. It could be said that Matt got a tad fortunate giving the armband to Haaland, who did not start the game and only converted via a spot kick which, having reviewed the footage, shouldn’t have been award – of course the same can be said for owners of Kevin De Bruyne (£12.6m) who claimed the assist, but perhaps should have picked up a yellow card for simulation.

Gameweek 15 looked like it was going to be a disaster for me. My team was looking pretty threadbare throughout. When I was unable to log into the FPL site to make my moves and change my captaincy, it looked like a big red arrow was a certainty. As it turned out, I ended with the best gameweek rank of the season and 80 points! All my differentials came through and only the highly owned Cancelo, Martinelli and Pope didn’t get any returns. Icing on the cake was that I would have moved on Salah for De Bruyne if I was able to log into FPL. Captaincy included, I think I’m up 6 points through not making that move and have a tasty home fixture for Salah next week. It could have been even better if my players didn’t receive a few late yellow cards.
