GW25 Buy, Sell, Keep

24 Feb. 2023

As the deadline looms closer, it is time to decide what to do with our precious free transfer(s). Aside from playing chips or selecting a captain, our transfers are the single most important aspect of our FPL campaign, and the importance of getting it right cannot be overstated.

In this article we crunch the numbers, analyse the fixtures, take advice from the Algorithm, and decide which player to buy, which player to sell, and which player to keep for Gameweek 25.

Caveat: This article was written on Thursday 23rd February prior to the Premier League press conferences and with Europa League fixtures still to play.

Salah

Liverpool’s poor form has come under intense scrutiny this season, and FPL managers have been ditching their assets in droves. Ahead of the Merseyside derby, ownership of Liverpool assets felt like they were at a historic low, with the (usually) near-essential Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) owned by just 3.5% of managers in the Top 100k.

However, despite the Red’s recent woes, Salah’s underlying statistics have still been strong. In fact, he is ranked 4th amongst all players for Expected FPL (xFPL) Points this season (Opta Stats Sandbox), showing that the Egyptian King has not lost his edge, even if he is under-performing in terms of FPL points.

But, with two goal involvements in his last two Premier League matches – not to mention a goal and assist against Real Madrid on Tuesday night – it certainly feels as if his actual returns are coming back in line with his underlying threat.

Add to this that Liverpool have two good fixtures in Gameweek 25 (and reasonable fixtures thereafter) and Salah becomes a strong candidate for the most important transfer this Gameweek. According to Player Points Projections, Salah is ranked top of all players for Gameweek 25 (and beyond).
