Chelsea's wingbacks James and Chilwell have racked up seven goals between them this season and in this comparison, their numbers are compared over the last two gameweeks.
The Touch Heat Map indicates that James took slightly more advanced positions than Chilwell and also saw more of the ball with 166 touches to the left-back's 143. A look at the 'Average Defensive' radar also backs this up, with Chilwell doing more defensive work than James (15 recoveries vs nine). However, James' 'Average Attacking Radar' is far superior and the numbers below indicate why.
James (five) has taken more than double the shots Chilwell (two) has managed and it is worth mentioning that the latter scored from his only shot in the box. What is also interesting is that apart from the superior goal threat, James is also noticeably ahead for creativity with five attempted assists to Chilwell's three. The marauding right-back has also created a 'big chance', something Chilwell has yet to manage.
Both fullbacks fare favourably for creativity when compared to other defenders over the last two gameweeks as per our Opta Stats Sandbox. No defender has attempted more assists than James (five) over the last two gameweeks and Chilwell (three) is not too far behind in fourth.
Only Cancelo (nine) and Rüdiger (six) have taken more shots than James (five) over the last two gameweeks, but City's flying Portuguese full-back has notched an Expected Goals (xG) figure of just 0.23 from those attempts, indicating they have been of low quality and from the eye-test more speculative efforts. James on the other hand, has registered 0.50 xG and only Evans 0.60 has registered more amongst defenders over the aforementioned period
Both Chelsea wingbacks are excellent options in their own right but on the basis of this comparison, James does appear to be the superior option.
