Fee – £52 million
Primary Position – Second Striker
Other position(s) – Attacking Midfield / Centre-Forward
Last season’s form – Games 25 / 16 goals, six assists
Born in Lagny-sur-Marne, France in 1997, Nkunku started his youth career with AS Marolles at the age of six. He joined Fontainebleau in 2009 and despite trials at several major clubs such as Lens, Le Havre and Monaco he was shunned for being too young and light. He was eventually signed by Paris St-Germain in 2010 and featured for their B team, with a notable runners-up finish in the 2015/16 UEFA Youth League. He made his debut for the first team in December 2015 and scored his first league goal only in January 2017. RB Leipzig signed the Frenchman in July 2019 for a fee of €13 million. He enjoyed a strong debut season with five goals and 15 assists in 32 Bundesliga appearances. His output dipped marginally in 20/21 with six goals and seven assists in 28 appearances but 21/22 saw his stock soar with 20 goals and 15 assists in 34 matches. He continued his role as a goalscorer last year with 16 goals and six assists in 25 league matches. He also scored thrice in the Champions League.
Chelsea struggled to score goals last season, averaging only a goal a game but as the below image from our Stats Sandbox feature shows, the London side were ranked eighth for shots (484). Nkunku's versatility allows him to play on the left-wing, centre-forwad and support striker, the Frenchman has been quoted as saying he feels most comfortable in a central role which should afford him plenty of opportunities to find the back of the net.
Looking at his Bundesliga numbers in more detail last season, he ranked 15th for chances created (1.6) but second for shots per game (three). He won three penalties for RB Leipzig and also scored four direct-free kicks, which indicates he has multiple routes to FPL points. His mins per shot of 25.7 was superior to any Chelsea asset bar Felix (20.7) last season and he also beats them all for minutes per chance created (48.7).
The Blues have trimmed their squad significantly over the Summer but there are still a lot of options in attacking positions with Mudryk, Madueke, Sterling and others still around. However, Nkunku's ability to play multiple positions bodes well for his starting prospects and he should be a regular starter for Pochettino's side. At 7.5m he is a great pick for Chelsea's attractive run of fixtures, as the below image shows the Blues are top of the Fixture Planner from Gameweek two onwards.
