Born in Spain’s Canary Islands, Pérez made his debut for his local team Tenerife in August 2013 in La Liga’s second division. He signed for Newcastle United in June 2014 and went on to make 36 appearances in his debut season, scoring seven goals. He featured for at least 34 appearances in each of his five seasons at the Northeast club indicating his fitness and durability despite the physical English game. His last season was by some distance his most prolific as he went on to score 12 goals, the first time he hit double digits on English soil. His role in Rodgers’ line-up is uncertain at present due to the wealth of attacking options in the Foxes’ squad. The fee would indicate that Pérez has been bought as a first-team player rather than a backup for Vardy so it is possible that Rodgers chooses to go with a two striker system this season, something he favoured during his time at Liverpool. Pérez’s versatility also means that he can play on either flank or as a no.10 but in that case he has to compete with Maddison, Albrighton, Gray, Ghezzal and H. Barnes which could see his game time limited. No team registered more shots on target than the Foxes’ 36 in the last six weeks of the 2018/19 campaign and Rodgers will be looking to carry this philosophy into the new season. Classified as a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a role up front would make Pérez an enticing out-of-position asset and as Vardy showed at the end of last season, this team is capable of scoring goals.
