A graduate of the VfB Stuttgart academy, Werner was promoted to the U-19 team despite being just 16 years of age in 2012/13. He went on to score 24 goals in his debut campaign. The German wonderkid became the youngest ever player to play for Stuttgart’s senior team the following year, at the age of 17. He then went on to make 93 appearances for the German league side, scoring 13 goals and was signed by Red Bulls Leipzig in the summer transfer window of 2016 for a club record transfer fee of €10 million. The forward scored 21, 13,16 and 28 (78 total) league goals in his four seasons with Leipzig over 127 appearances. The German international's last campaign for Leipzig was particularly impressive where he notched a total of 36 goal involvements while featuring in every single league game. He has also scored 11 goals in 29 appearances for the German national team over three years. Chelsea have bought themselves a proven goalscorer, Werner trailed only Lewandowski in the Bundesliga for goals scored (34 vs 28) and also minutes per goal (81 vs 100). His versatility is an attribute that should see him feature regularly on the team-sheet as he is lethal in any position across the front three, while his creativity should benefit the likes of Abraham and Giroud as well. Chelsea only trailed Liverpool and Man. City in the creativity stats in 2019/20, their problem was putting away their chances and Werner is a huge step up from what they already have. The fact that he played at least 30 matches in each of the last four campaigns is also assuring to Fantasy Premier League managers as it indicates he is not an injury prone player and can be relied upon.
