Wain's Wonders: Gameweek 31 Review

9 April 2015

Hello again. I’m back, ready to dissect the GW just gone, update you on how Wain’s Wonders performed and muse potential transfers for GW 32. Firstly though lets begin with GW 31 and for me it can be summed up by cracking strikes, crazy results and captain fantastic.

Starting with the goals, this has to have been one of the best weeks ever for high quality goals. It started with Sanchez’s thunderbolt at lunchtime Saturday, making me rue my Friday afternoon transfer of Sanchez to Mane and costing me 12 points, before Zamora, Rooney, Adam and Defoe got in on the act, finishing with a class finish by Toure on Monday night. Much debate has been had over the weekends best goal, with many of them contenders for goal of the season. My housemate and fantasy confidant Joel, a striker himself, admire the technique displayed by Rooney whereas I was more a fan of the audacious attempt by Charlie Adam taking on Courtois from 65 yards. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Turning to the results, QPR showed that they will not be going down without a fight as they surprised all those who had faith in the Pulis effect at West Brom, winning 3-1. I was one of those with faith in the Pulis defensive record and handed the goalkeeper gloves to Myhill. I was not dissatisfied with the outcome however, as Charlie Austin, my differential captain in the top 50 this week, slotted home from a corner after supplying the assist for the Vargas opener. The first game on Saturday also shocked me as Liverpool were well and truly trounced by Arsenal. I had failed to account for how big a difference Skrtel made to the Liverpool backbone when transferring out Sanchez. With his points, I would have been sat in 4th place over night but instead I will be cowering behind the sofa in GW 32 as Arsenal travel to Burnley. Monday night football produced another great match, this time ending any hope of Man City challenging Chelsea for the title and potentially threatening their Champions League place. The lack of goals from Aguero is definitely a concern and is a transfer that I will be considering this week.

Looking at all this and the rest of the week from a fantasy point of view, I scored a below average total of 73 points, the majority courtesy of Austin’s haul of 42. Somehow without any Arsenal players, or Benteke or Phillips, I only dropped to 14th but unfortunately the lead to number 1, Simon March, is now a massive 51 points. I don’t think anyone was expecting Benteke to score 4 goals this game week and Phillips to return 20 points but it has really impacted on the overall tables.

Assessing the up coming GW, I once again go into it with 2 free transfers but this time with £5.3m in the bank which had been kept in reserve for Diego Costa. His injury has made this weeks transfer decision much more difficult and I am in the tough position of deciding whether to take some punts in an a attempt to win the whole competition or to play safe and consolidate a great overall rank. The current world number 6 showed that it is possible to make up a big gap with some clever transfers as he scored a massive 121 points and jumped from 70th to 6th and puts himself right in contention to win the whole thing.

My likely transfer will be the removal of Austin who has some tough fixtures coming up. The options are a plenty with Murray, Gomis, Remy and Rooney all in the picture for a call up. Another dilemma this week is the captaincy decision as both Chelsea and Spurs have plum fixtures, meaning Kane and Hazard will be popular options. If I bring in Remy I may even captain him in an attempt to be different to the rest of the top 50.

One game to keep an eye on is tonights FA Cup replay between Liverpool and Blackburn. If Liverpool progress they will have a blank GW 33 and a double game week in either GW 34 or GW 37.

Hopefully next weeks update will revolve around my charge back into the top 10. Until next time you can keep up to date with my transfers @jawain04 on Twitter or comment below this article.
