Wain's Wonders - GW37

14 May 2015

Oh dear. Oh dear. Oh dear.

From the nosebleed heights of 2nd in the world and only 27 points away from the summit, one bad decision has sent me plummeting back down to earth with a bang.

Having debated the captaincy gamble in last weeks article, I came to the conclusion that this was the week to gamble in an attempt to catch Simon March. I knew that most people would be captaining Aguero at home to QPR but took the risk and went for Sanchez on the back of his two goals the game week before. In my first article for FFF I noted down some of my worst decisions but this totally eclipses the Defoe, Zabaleta and Welbeck transfers and is definitely the most devastating move of the season.

If I had played safe and captained Aguero like the masses around me, I would be 19 points behind the number 1 spot with 2 weeks to go. It would still have been a tough ask to reign him in but at least I would have been in with a chance. Now I sit 6th and 40 points behind with no chance of winning, and just competing for position within the top 10. It looks to me that like the Premier League the title is wrapped up. Simon is now 27 points ahead of a new challenger in second place and seemingly well set up for the DGW that is upon us.

To update you all Wain’s Wonders returned 79 points for a GW rank of 260,359 which would have been a round 100 points if I had captained Aguero.

Turning away from the disaster of GW 36 and looking at the last two GW’s of the season, I think as well as form and fixtures there are other factors that fantasy managers need to be considering. The fact that many teams have absolutely nothing but pride to play for can lead to some interesting results. Tottenham, Southampton and Everton have gone off the boil whereas teams in the relegation battle are suddenly performing at 100%. Leicester continued to shine in GW 36 and have a plum fixture against QPR in GW 38 as well as a trip to Sunderland in GW 37 which could bring some points to their rejuvenated squad.

Another factor that I am considering is whether Steven Gerrard is going to leave the Premier League with aplomb. He has now scored twice in two weeks and is beginning to remind us of how valuable a fantasy asset he once was. Is it too ridiculous to expect another goal or two in the final weeks of the season? He could prove a great differential for anyone chasing mini league victory.

Sunderland and Arsenal assets are going to be the most transferred in players but as I mentioned last week it is going to be hard to pick the ones that score the points. Graham, Defoe, Wickham all look similar in terms of stats and points potential and don’t forget the options of Larson and Gomez in midfield. Arsenals attack continues to be a case of trying to hit the rabbit on the head and after their disappointing loss to Swansea on Monday we may well see a more restrained Arsenal side going forward.

Keep an eye out on Twitter for my transfer plans and as always I am happy to answer any questions you may have @jawain04. Good luck for GW 37.
